BEACH BITS From Sunday, June 17, 2001
Courtesy of Tim Simmons

· The Gold Medal match
was an upset, as fifth-seeded Scott
Ayakatubby/Eduardo
Bacil beat top seeded Canyon Ceman/Mike Whitmarsh
for the title, marking the
second such decision
between the two teams todayâ€|Sunday's action saw six
upsets out of 14 matchesâ€|out of the 16 matches in
Saturday's first round
winner's bracket, seven were
upsets, where the lower-seeded team topped the
higher
seeded teamâ€|in the other 32 matches on Saturday, there
were a total of
nine more seed breakthroughs, all
happening in the loser's bracket.
· For the second
straight week, the men's AVP title was won by means of
comebackâ€|last week in Hermosa Beach, top-seeded Dax
Holdren/Todd Rogers
completed an unbelievable victory
after being down 13-7 in game three,
finishing with
an 8-2 run to win 17-15 over third-seeded Dain
Blanton/Eric
Fonoimoanaâ€|the Huntington Beach title was
claimed by Ayakatubby/Bacil, who
after winning game
one, held a brief lead at 2-1 in the second
gameâ€|following
that point, Ceman/Whitmarsh led the rest of game
two and all of game three
until Ayakatubby/Bacil
took the lead at 16-15 before winning 17-15â€|
Ceman/Whitmarsh had two match points denied.
·
Ayakatubby/Bacil finished the weekend with a perfect 6-0 record,
but it was
by no means easyâ€|each of their last
four matches required a third game, and
those four
matches averaged 58 minutes in durationâ€|the longest
match of the
tournament though, belonged to No. 2
Nick Hannemann/Adam Jewell and No. 19 Mike
Lambert/Colin Smith, who battled each other for 1 hour, 15
minutes before the
higher seeds escaped with a 24-22
win in game three to advance to the Olympic
Crossing semifinals.
· Ceman/Whitmarsh advanced to
the Olympic Crossing semifinals in what could be
billed as the Battle of the Witsâ€|their opponents were
brothers Andy and Larry
Wittâ€|Whitmarsh of course
qualified by means of his nickname
"Whit"â€|Ceman/Whitmarsh advanced with a 22-20 and 21-16 victory.
·
Mike Lambert/Colin Smith were seeded 19th entering the
tournament, and
claimed an impressive fourthâ€|on
Saturday, the duo was unstoppable, defeating
three
teams (seeded 14th, 30th and 22nd) in advancing to the
winner's bracket
semifinalsâ€|on Sunday, although
Lambert/Smith finished in fourth place, the
only match they
won was a forfeit against fourth-seeded Brent
Frohoiff/David
Swatikâ€|their three losses came to the
fifth-seeded and second-seeded (twice)
teams.
Tim

Volleyball circuit owner plans to unify sport
(USA Today) Breaking news!!!
By David Leon
Moore
LOS ANGELES : Agent Leonard Armato hopes his latest
involvement with the financially
struggling sport of pro
beach volleyball turns out as well as what's going on
recently with
his biggest client, Los Angeles Lakers
center Shaquille O'Neal.Armato will announce today
that he has acquired the Association of Volleyball
Professionals and will unify competing
beach volleyball
circuits into one domestic tour the AVP, which will
feature both men's
and women's competition.Armato
founded the AVP in 1983 and led it to surprising heights
$100,000 first-prize purses, live network TV, recognizable
stars such as Sinjin Smith
and Karch Kiraly before
being ousted by the players in a political flap in
1989.Gaining
Olympic status seemed to give the sport a
stamp of approval, and it was a big hit in Atlanta
in 1996. But sponsorship and TV money dried up in
the late 1990s, and at the end of 1998,
the AVP
declared bankruptcy. It reorganized and limped along the
last 2 years with drastic
cuts in events and prize
money.Armato's plan: unify, rebuild burned bridges and market,
market, market."In the past, the players owned the AVP,
and they sucked out every dollar
into prize
money, so there wasn't any real marketing effort,"
Armato says. "The importance
of their sponsors and
the importance of TV were just not recognized. The
thing just
crumbled because of a self-driven,
ego-motivated attitude. I've told the players that we have
to sell this sport 24 hours a day to the fans, to
sponsors, to TV."Armato has all the top
U.S. players,
men and women, signed to 4-year agreements with three
exceptions. The
reigning Olympic gold medalists, Dain
Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana, have not signed up.
They
are concerned about protecting their sponsors and
about freedom to compete on the
FIVB international
tour."It's a tour-friendly deal, not a player-friendly
deal," Blanton says
of Armato's contracts. "To be
that handcuffed is very difficult."But Armato and
Blanton
both say they expect to reach an agreement.
On the women's side, Olympian Misty May, a
former partner of Holly McPeak, Armato's girlfriend, has
not signed.The first event under
the reorganized
AVP is June 8-10 in Hermosa Beach,Calif., where both
men and women
will play. In all, the 2001
schedule will include eight events (five with men and
women,
three with men only). Total prize money is
nearly $1 million. All events will be shown
tape-delayed on Fox Sports Net.Armato had tough negotiations
with veteran AVP players
such as Kiraly and Mike
Whitmarsh over adopting FIVB rules smaller court, different
ball,
rally scoring. In the end, though, the players
had no alternative."The other option was to
stop
playing," says Whitmarsh, 39, who, paired with Canyon
Ceman, will be one of the
favorites at Hermosa. "We
made some compromises. We also came to the realization
that
Leonard might be the one who can resurrect
our sport."

Karch Kiraly Signs AVP Player Agreement
We are
pleased to announce that Karch Kiraly has signed his
AVP Player Agreement. Karch was instrumental in
achieving
many of the concessions made to the players as
contained
in the Addendum (including the increase of over
$1 million in
guaranteed prize money) and was
extremely helpful in
making our acquisition of the AVP
a reality. While Karch did
not officially meet
the Friday deadline, Karch publicly
indicated his
support of our acquisition last Thursday and
reiterated his intention to sign on Friday. The only reason
that
he did not sign his contract by the deadline was
because his
agents were unavailable to review the
Agreement and
Addendum in time. The agents reviewed the
contract this
weekend and Karch has signed the exact
same contract (and
Addendum) as each the other
players. There are no side
deals with Karch or any
other player.
Karch has raised a few points that we
are going to address
over the next several days.
If we agree to any of his
suggested changes,
they will be incorporated into a second
Addendum
that will be incorporated into each of the AVP
Player Agreements.
~Andy Reif, Chief Operating

volleyball unification
The agent is trying to combine the
AVP and BVA, putting both on hold.
May 3,
2001
By SHAWN PRICE
The Orange County
Register

Dark clouds once again are hovering over professional
volleyball's beach party. For better or
worse, the sport
is going through its latest evolution while a
familiar face tries to unify the
sport into a more
Olympic-ready colossus.Super agent and former beach game player
Leonard Armato has purchased the Beach Volleyball of
America tour from owner Charlie
Jackson. Now Armato,
a co-founder of the Association of Volleyball
Professionals in 1983,
is trying to buy that league by
Monday and unite it again as one tour if he can
gather
enough interested investors. The players' future is
uncertain and their patience is growing
thin. The
entire AVP schedule has been retracked and a BVA event
scheduled for this
weekend in Miami was canceled."I
don't think anybody really knows what's going on," said
Olympic and BVA star Misty May of Costa Mesa. "I was in
China for a tournament when I
got the E-mail and I
sent it to my parents."In it, both men's and women's
players were
notified that Armato had filed a letter
of intent to the AVP majority owner Spencer Trask
Ventures in New York to buy the AVP by April 30. That
decision has been extended one
week as both sides try
to agree on the deal. And while the unifying of the
two competing
tours is seen almost universally as
a good idea, some AVP athletes are less than
thrilled with
the idea of playing with international
rules, as Armato is expected to use."If going
international is what they have to do, then it's what they have
to do," said Brent Doble of
Capistrano Beach.

In latest blow to longtime series, Blanton and
Fonoimoana are expected
to join upstart Beach Volleyball
America tour.

Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana,
gold-medal winners in beach
volleyball at the Sydney
Olympics, have left the Assn. of Volleyball
Professionals and are expected to join the new Beach Volleyball
America
tour.

With the help of their lawyers,
Blanton and Fonoimoana have been
released from their
AVP contracts after several months of acrimony
and
bitterness.

Blanton and Fonoimoana, who
fought openly with the AVP last year in a
dispute
over qualifying for the Olympics, are strong additions
to the
BVA, which started last year as a women's
tour but will add a men's tour
when the season
tentatively begins in April.

The move of Blanton and
Fonoimoana to the BVA is the latest blow to
the AVP,
which was established in 1983 but has undergone
several
recent changes.

The AVP's Marina del Rey
headquarters have been closed and operational
authority
has been transferred to Wall Street, home of the
venture-capital
company that rescued the AVP from bankruptcy in
March 1999.

Bill Berger, AVP chief executive
officer, has been ousted, and power
now rests with
Spencer Segura, senior managing director of corporate
finance at Spencer Trask Ventures Inc in New York.

"We've had our headaches with this thing," Segura
said. "We've tried to
let [the AVP] manage it on
their own. Only when we've had real
problems have
we gotten involved. Now we're getting involved."

Segura denied that the AVP, which has remained
cash-strapped since
being acquired by Spencer Trask and has
yet to announce a schedule for
the 2001 season,
is on the verge of folding.

"It's almost a
break-even proposition," Segura said. "We wanted to get
really professional management in. I think in the long
run we're going to
bring expert management to the
company that hasn't been seen by the
volleyball
arena. It's so close to working, we want to keep it
going."

Segura doubted that the BVA would pose a
threat to the AVP, even with
Blanton and Fonoimoana.

"I think the AVP has a bigger following than the
BVA," he said. "If you
ask any beach volleyball
nut, they've heard of the AVP. They haven't
heard
of the BVA."

With a smaller court, a
heavier ball and rally-scored matches, the rules of
the BVA mirror those of international tournaments,
including the
Olympics.

Segura doesn't foresee
letting AVP players out of their stringent
contracts
to play in BVA events. If that's the case, the BVA
will have to
use players who don't belong to the
AVP--Sinjin Smith, Carl Henkel,
Kevin Wong, Rob Heidger,
Jeff Nygaard and Dan Landry, among others.

The problem between the AVP and Blanton-Fonoimoana
began last June.
Blanton and Fonoimoana were
suspended briefly by the AVP because
they registered
for an international tournament in Italy that was
being
played at the same time as an AVP tournament in
Muskegon, Mich.

The only way to earn points toward
Olympic qualifying was in
international tournaments.
Under the language of their contracts,
however,
Blanton and Fonoimoana needed permission from the AVP
to
compete in non-AVP tournaments.

The duo
spurned the AVP, earned enough points to qualify for
the
Olympics and stunned the beach volleyball world
by winning the gold at
Sydney.

The
animosity continued after the Olympics. A solution couldn't
be
found . . . until now.

"Because we are
out of our contracts, we are free agents,"
Fonoimoana
said. "They don't hold us hostage anymore."
