AVP Huntington Beach-June17th Beach Bits

BEACH BITS From Sunday, June 17, 2001
Courtesy of Tim Simmons

· The Gold Medal match
was an upset, as fifth-seeded Scott
Ayakatubby/Eduardo
Bacil beat top seeded Canyon Ceman/Mike Whitmarsh
for the title, marking the
second such decision
between the two teams todayâ€|Sunday's action saw six
upsets out of 14 matchesâ€|out of the 16 matches in
Saturday's first round
winner's bracket, seven were
upsets, where the lower-seeded team topped the
higher
seeded teamâ€|in the other 32 matches on Saturday, there
were a total of
nine more seed breakthroughs, all
happening in the loser's bracket.
· For the second
straight week, the men's AVP title was won by means of
comebackâ€|last week in Hermosa Beach, top-seeded Dax
Holdren/Todd Rogers
completed an unbelievable victory
after being down 13-7 in game three,
finishing with
an 8-2 run to win 17-15 over third-seeded Dain
Blanton/Eric
Fonoimoanaâ€|the Huntington Beach title was
claimed by Ayakatubby/Bacil, who
after winning game
one, held a brief lead at 2-1 in the second
gameâ€|following
that point, Ceman/Whitmarsh led the rest of game
two and all of game three
until Ayakatubby/Bacil
took the lead at 16-15 before winning 17-15â€|
Ceman/Whitmarsh had two match points denied.
·
Ayakatubby/Bacil finished the weekend with a perfect 6-0 record,
but it was
by no means easyâ€|each of their last
four matches required a third game, and
those four
matches averaged 58 minutes in durationâ€|the longest
match of the
tournament though, belonged to No. 2
Nick Hannemann/Adam Jewell and No. 19 Mike
Lambert/Colin Smith, who battled each other for 1 hour, 15
minutes before the
higher seeds escaped with a 24-22
win in game three to advance to the Olympic
Crossing semifinals.
· Ceman/Whitmarsh advanced to
the Olympic Crossing semifinals in what could be
billed as the Battle of the Witsâ€|their opponents were
brothers Andy and Larry
Wittâ€|Whitmarsh of course
qualified by means of his nickname
"Whit"â€|Ceman/Whitmarsh advanced with a 22-20 and 21-16 victory.
·
Mike Lambert/Colin Smith were seeded 19th entering the
tournament, and
claimed an impressive fourthâ€|on
Saturday, the duo was unstoppable, defeating
three
teams (seeded 14th, 30th and 22nd) in advancing to the
winner's bracket
semifinalsâ€|on Sunday, although
Lambert/Smith finished in fourth place, the
only match they
won was a forfeit against fourth-seeded Brent
Frohoiff/David
Swatikâ€|their three losses came to the
fifth-seeded and second-seeded (twice)
teams.
Tim
Simmons, BFishInc
