Rosarito, Mexico - Led by two qualifying men's
teams from Australia,<br> eight tandems <br> advanced
from the Qualification Tournament here Thursday (June
1) to<br> the Main Draw of <br> the $300,000 Mexico
Open on Rosarito Beach south of Tijuana near the<br>
Mexico and United <br> States border.<br> The Aussie
tandems of 16th-seeded Andrew Schacht/Victor Anfilloff
and<br> 22nd-seeded Mark <br> Lukowicz/Rowan Searle
joined teams from Brazil, Cuba, Germany,<br> Japan,
Switzerland and <br> the United States in advancing to the
opening rounds Friday of the<br> 32-team Mexico Open <br>
Main Draw.<br> The second annual Mexico Open started
Wednesday with 48 men's teams<br> competing in the <br>
Qualification Tournament. The Mexico Open is the fourth men's
event<br> on the 2000 FIVB <br> Beach Volleyball World
Tour. The Mexico Open has attracted 129 men's<br> and
women's <br> teams from 32 countries.<br> The Mexico Open
is the first combined men's and women's event on
the<br> 2000 FIVB Beach <br> Volleyball World Tour. Two
more combined international events are set<br> for
North America <br> at Toronto (June 13-18) and Chicago
(June 28-July 4).<br> Friday's Main Draws for both men
and women start at 9 a.m. with a total<br> of 80
matches <br> being played. The five-day event concludes
Sunday when the final two<br> teams in each gender <br>
battle for the $26,000 first-place prizes.<br> Schacht
and Anfilloff advanced to the Main Draw with a 15-9
win over<br> eighth-seeded Karch <br> Kiraly and
Brent Doble of the United States. Lukowicz and Searle
earned<br> a Main Draw berth <br> by eliminating
third-seeded Christian Jodard and Jean Philippe Penigaud<br>
of France 15-8.<br> Other teams qualifying were
fifth-seeded Oliver Oetke/Andreas<br> Scheuerpflug of Germany,
<br> 12th-seeded Markus Egger/Bernhard Vesti of
Switzerland, 14th-seeded<br> Francisco <br> Alvarez/Juan
Rosell of Cuba, 18th-seeded Koh Ozaki/Taichi
Morikawa<br> of Japan. Ozaki and <br> Morikawa became the
first Japanese team to qualify for a men's Main<br>
Draw since the start of <br> the 1999 FIVB Beach
Volleyball World Tour season.<br> In country playoffs,
Brazil and the United States qualified the final two<br>
teams to the Main <br> Draw. Dax Holdren and Todd
Rogers of the United States posted<br> five-straight
upset wins in <br> the Qualification Tournament. Seeded
34th in the competiton, Holdren<br> and Rogers <br>
eliminated American rivals seventh-seeded Bill
Boullianne/Ian Clark<br> (15-7) and <br> Kiraly/Doble (15-5).
Marcio Araujo and Benjamin earned another Main<br> Draw
spot for <br> Brazil by eliminating fellow countrymen
27th-seeded Fred<br> Souza/Anjinho Bacil 15-6 and <br>
top-seeded Franco Neto/Roberto Lopes 15-11.<br> The first
three men's FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour events
have<br> featured different <br> winners with Ze'Marco de
Melo and Ricardo Santos defeating Marcio<br> Araujo
and Benjamin <br> Insfran in an All-Brazilian Gold
Medal match last Sunday in the Macau<br> Open.<br> The
Mexico Open is one of the 10 remaining events where
men's and<br> women's teams can <br> post finishes used
to determine the teams for the 2000 Sydney
Olympic<br> Games. To qualify <br> for Sydney, a team must
post a minimum of eight FIVB Beach Volleyball<br>
World Tour <br> finishes between January 1, 1999
through August 15, 2000. The most<br> teams a nation can
<br> qualify for Sydney is two per gender, except host
Australia that can be<br> represented by three <br> teams
in each competition.
