Rosarito, Mexico - Led by two qualifying men's
teams from Australia, eight tandems advanced
from the Qualification Tournament here Thursday (June
1) to the Main Draw of the $300,000 Mexico
Open on Rosarito Beach south of Tijuana near the 
Mexico and United States border. The Aussie
tandems of 16th-seeded Andrew Schacht/Victor Anfilloff
and 22nd-seeded Mark Lukowicz/Rowan Searle
joined teams from Brazil, Cuba, Germany, Japan,
Switzerland and the United States in advancing to the
opening rounds Friday of the 32-team Mexico Open 
Main Draw. The second annual Mexico Open started
Wednesday with 48 men's teams competing in the 
Qualification Tournament. The Mexico Open is the fourth men's
event on the 2000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World
Tour. The Mexico Open has attracted 129 men's and
women's teams from 32 countries. The Mexico Open
is the first combined men's and women's event on
the 2000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. Two
more combined international events are set for
North America at Toronto (June 13-18) and Chicago
(June 28-July 4). Friday's Main Draws for both men
and women start at 9 a.m. with a total of 80
matches being played. The five-day event concludes
Sunday when the final two teams in each gender 
battle for the $26,000 first-place prizes. Schacht
and Anfilloff advanced to the Main Draw with a 15-9
win over eighth-seeded Karch Kiraly and
Brent Doble of the United States. Lukowicz and Searle
earned a Main Draw berth by eliminating
third-seeded Christian Jodard and Jean Philippe Penigaud 
of France 15-8. Other teams qualifying were
fifth-seeded Oliver Oetke/Andreas Scheuerpflug of Germany,
 12th-seeded Markus Egger/Bernhard Vesti of
Switzerland, 14th-seeded Francisco Alvarez/Juan
Rosell of Cuba, 18th-seeded Koh Ozaki/Taichi
Morikawa of Japan. Ozaki and Morikawa became the
first Japanese team to qualify for a men's Main 
Draw since the start of the 1999 FIVB Beach
Volleyball World Tour season. In country playoffs,
Brazil and the United States qualified the final two 
teams to the Main Draw. Dax Holdren and Todd
Rogers of the United States posted five-straight
upset wins in the Qualification Tournament. Seeded
34th in the competiton, Holdren and Rogers 
eliminated American rivals seventh-seeded Bill
Boullianne/Ian Clark (15-7) and Kiraly/Doble (15-5).
Marcio Araujo and Benjamin earned another Main Draw
spot for Brazil by eliminating fellow countrymen
27th-seeded Fred Souza/Anjinho Bacil 15-6 and 
top-seeded Franco Neto/Roberto Lopes 15-11. The first
three men's FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour events
have featured different winners with Ze'Marco de
Melo and Ricardo Santos defeating Marcio Araujo
and Benjamin Insfran in an All-Brazilian Gold
Medal match last Sunday in the Macau Open. The
Mexico Open is one of the 10 remaining events where
men's and women's teams can post finishes used
to determine the teams for the 2000 Sydney
Olympic Games. To qualify for Sydney, a team must
post a minimum of eight FIVB Beach Volleyball 
World Tour finishes between January 1, 1999
through August 15, 2000. The most teams a nation can
 qualify for Sydney is two per gender, except host
Australia that can be represented by three teams
in each competition.
