USA Tandems Advance in Mexico Open ROSARITO,
MEXICO - 7 teams from the United States advanced to
the final Qualification Tournament rounds after
winning FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour matches
here (May 31) in the $300,000 men's & women's Mexico
Open on Rosarito Beach. The 2nd annual
Mexico Open started Wednesday with 48 men's & 33 
women's teams competing in the $300,000 event that has
attracted 129 men's & women's teams from 32
countries. The Mexico Open is the 1st combined men's &
women's event on the 2000 FIVB Beach Volleyball
World Tour. 2 more combined international events
are set for North America at Toronto (June 13-18)
& Chicago (June 28-July 4). Play continues
at 9 a.m. (PDT) Thursday with 8 teams in each
gender earning spots in the 32-team Main Draw.
Friday's Main Draws for both men & women starts at
9 a.m. with a total of 80 matches being played. The
5-day event concludes Sunday when the final 2 teams
in each gender battle for the $26,000 
1st-place prizes. Led by 8th-seeded Karch Kiraly
(San Clemente, Calif.) & Brent Doble (Dana 
Point, Calif.), the United States advanced 3 men's teams
to Thursday's play while the American women
have advanced 4 tandems in the final 
Qualification Tournament rounds to determine the final Main
Draw berths. Kiraly, the Gold Medallist in the
inaugural beach volleyball competition at the 1996
Atlanta Olympic Games, is playing with Doble this weekend
after learning that Adam Johnson (Lagunda Beach,
Calif.) couldn't compete in the Mexico Open due
to illness. "This is a great opportunity for
me," said Doble. "It's an honor to play with 
the greatest player in the game along with getting a
taste of international play. The competition is
intense & I have no time to think about getting 
nervous." Kiraly/Doble won both of their matches to advance
unbeaten to Thursday's opening matches against
16th-seeded Andrew Schacht/Victor Anfilloff of Australia,
who upset top-seeded Franco Neto/Roberto Lopes of
Brazil 15-13. Also posting perfect records for the
United States men Wednesday were the teams of
7th-seeded Bill Boullianne (Redondo Beach, Calif./Ian
Clark (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) & 34th-seeded Dax
Holdren (Redondo Beach, Calif.)/Todd Rogers 
(Goleta, Calif.). Boullianne/Clark, who won both
of their matches Wednesday, won the inaugural
Mexico Open in Acapulco last season for the 1st
international beach win by a USA men's team since
1996. "It doesn't feel the same this year," said
Boullianne Wednesday. "We started the 1999 season with a
win & ended the season with several disappointing
finishes. Part of our problems at the end of 1999 was 
injuries. We're both in better shape right now. We just
take it 1 game at a time." 2nd round:
