Additional match notes (men):
Adam
Johnson/Karch Kiraly were seeded first in the tournament. They
were put into the losers bracket in their first round
game by 16th seeded Brent
Frohoff/Adam Jewell by a
score of 15-4! Frohoff/Jewell were on fire after having
made it into the main draw via the qualifier on
Thursday and Friday. Johnson/Kiraly’s first game in
the
losers bracket was on an outer court but it had a huge
crowd around it.It was against Brent Doble/Lee LeGrande
who took Johnson/Kiraly down several times last
year, but not this time in 2000.
Johnson/Kiraly
defeated Doble/LeGrande 15-9. Johnson/Kiraly then went on
to prevail over Jerry Graham/Chris Makos 15-4. It
was David Swatik/Mike
Whitmarsh who then
eliminated Johnson/Kiraly from the tournament in a 15-13
battle on another outer court that was well attended by
fans. Swatik/Whitmarsh looked good, but they were taken
out the tournament in their next game against Dax
Holdren/Todd Roger, who went on to win the tournament.
Johnson/Kiraly took 7th place. They came close to finishing much
higher.
Some of Johnson’s incredible effectiveness
jump serving is diminished with the Mikasa
ball.
Aaron Boss/Stein Metzger took 5th place in their first
outing together.Boss was heard to
say that his
partner carried him through the tournament, but Metzger
had nothing but good
things to say about Boss.
Boss/Metzger were put into the loser bracket in a 16-14 epic
battle against Dain Blanton/Eric Fonoimoana that took an
hour and ten minutes.
Blanton/Fonoimoana went on
to take the Bronze. Boss/Metzger were
eliminated
from the
tournament by Heidger/Wong who went on
to take 4th place.
In the next US tournament for
men, the AVP Delray Beach event, Boss
and Metzger
will
be playing with different partners. Boss,
who played with Dan Castillo
last year, is
playing
Delray with Matt Lyles. Matt Lyles played
with Wayne Seligson last year,
but Seligson is
currently nursing a shoulder injury and Dan
Castillo has another
commitment during
Delray.
Metzger will be playing with Ian Clark, while Clark’s
long-time
partner Bill
Boullianne goes with Nick
Hannemann for Delray. Clark will be playing
his usual
left-side while Metzger makes the shift to
right-side in this exciting new
partnership.
After
Brent Frohoff/Adam Jewell’s upset of Johnson/Kiraly,
they were
eliminated from
the tournament by
Holdren/Roger and then Boss/Metzger. Frohoff/Jewell
took
9th.
Sinjin Smith/Sean Scott were eliminated by
Boullianne/Clark and then
Bryan Ivie/Collin
Smith, who
finished 7th. Sinjin Smith/Sean Scott ended up with a
9th.
Canyon Ceman/Brian Lewis were eliminated by
Boullianne/Clark and
then
Swatik/Whitmarsh and took 9th
place.
Brent Doble/Lee LeGrande uno-dosed. First
Holdren/Rogers beat them
15-9 in an 80
minute long game
and then Johnson/Kiraly defeated them 15-9.
Doble/LeGrande took
13th.
Additional match notes
(women):
First seeded Liz Masakayan/Elaine Youngs finished
7th. They were first
upset in their
second
round 15-6 game by ninth seeded Karrie Poppinga/Angela
Rock
and then
eliminated from the tournament by
Linda Hanley/Nancy Reno in a 15-7
game.
Karrie
Poppinga/Angela Rock had a great tournament and finished 4th.
There was
potential for higher but Rock’s knee
problem prevented further
advancement.
Linda
Hanley/Nancy Reno finished 5th. They lost to May/McPeak
and
Davis/Johnson
Jordan.
Danalee
Bragado/Ali Wood also finished 5th. They lost to
Hanley/Reno
and
Poppinga/Rock.
Carrie Busch/Leanne
Schuster finished 7th after losing to Davis/Johnson
Jordan and then
Danalee Bragado/Ali Wood.
Tenth
seeded Marsha Miller/Jen Pavley finished 9th after
narrowly
missing a shot at 5th
when they lost 14-16
to Danalee Bragado/Ali Wood, who went on to
place 5th.<
