Deerfield Beach, FL April 16, 2000 - Weather
conditions remained
beautiful throughout
today’s
matches.
Men’s Gold Medal Match results:
Dax
Holdren/Todd Rogers def. Bill Boullianne/Ian Clark 15-9
Holdren/Rogers take the Gold and split $20,000
Boullianne/Clark take the Silver and split $14,000
This is
Holdren/Rogers’ third open win and all the best US men
players
competed in this
Deerfield Beach Alero
tournament. Each of their wins in 1998 and 1999
were
“footnoted” because some strong teams like Johnson/Kiraly
and
Blanton/Fonoimoana
were absent from those
tournaments. Although Holdren/Rogers never
went up against
Karch Kiraly/Adam Johnson in this tournament, it
is likely they could
have beat them if
they
had. While Holdren/Rogers have beaten virtually every
other US
team at one time or
another in open
tournament play, they have never beaten Kiraly/Johnson
in an actual
tournament.
Men’s Bronze Medal
Match results:
Dain Blanton/Eric Fonoimoana def.
Rob Heidger/Kevin Wong 15-12
Blanton/Fonoimoana
take the Bronze and split $10,000
Heidger/Wong
take 4th place and split $7,500
Women’s Gold Medal
Match results:
Misty May/Holly McPeak def. Lisa
Arce/Barbara Fontana 15-8
May/McPeak take the Gold and
split $20,000
Arce/Fontana take the Silver and
split $14,000
This is May/McPeak’s first open win
in the US and undoubtedly not their
last. Misty
May
AND Holly McPeak were awesome. It must be
tough for their opposing
team to decide
which
one of them to serve. While Misty is not considered
exceedingly
tall at 5’10”, her
blocking ability is
something to be reckoned with. Her jump serve on the
beach is as
effective as it was at The Beach (Long
Beach State University). Both
Misty and Holly
were running down balls on defensive and touching them
if not getting
them up. When
hitting
against big blocks, such as those of Lisa Arce, Annett
Davis, and
Jenny Johnson
Jordan, neither Misty
or Holly seemed to have much trouble jumping out
of the sand and
either crushing the ball to the
sand, tooling the block, or soft-hitting the
ball
to open court.
Holly McPeak’s determination to
win is well documented. Misty May’s
determination
and
dedication is no different from Holly’s.
Walking away from her 17-16
victory over
David/Johnson Jordan, Misty was heard to say she wants to
become a
much better player
in response to a
compliment of her awesome performance. There is no
doubt
- she is the
real thing.
Women’s Bronze
Medal Match results:
Annett Davis/Jenny Johnson
Jordan won by forfeit.
David/Johnson Jordan win the
Bronze Medal and split $10,000
Karrie Popinga/Angela
Rock win 4th place and split $7,500
