From ESPN... HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Nothing like a little spy scandal to spice up
the
football rivalry between West Virginia and Marshall.

Heading into only their second matchup in 83 years -- and it took the governor's
involvement to help set this September's game -- school officials on both sides
confirm a
West Virginia student was caught spying at a Marshall practice this month.

The student was confronted April 11 after he was spotted sitting in the
bleachers at
Edwards Stadium taking detailed notes in a stenographer's notebook.

Thundering Herd practices have been open to the public this spring, but NCAA
rules
prohibit opposing coaches or football program representatives from attending
another
school's practice without permission.

This is from the Boston Herald. The article talks about how Jim Larranaga (HC at
George
Mason) was overlooked by Bob Marcum while at UMASS... "And then they transported
me
out to Amherst, and then I had dinner with (former UMass athletic director) Bob
Marcum."
Larranaga also remembered his phone ringing at around 9:30 that night, and from
there,
the process completely changed.
"I later found out that the call was Steve Lappas, or at least about him," said
Larranaga,
who recalled a complete change in Marcum's demeanor. "His whole train of thought
from
then on was different.
"It was like, `Boy, would I love to hire a Big East coach.' "

UMass' downward spiral from Division 1 prominence is well documented.

Taken from HuntingtonNews.net "McG: I'm so taken by the Ohio River, the
floodwall… with
this city's ability to fight back. We're using the metaphor of water for the
cyclical
component of life. The picture is going to open with a shot of the sky then come
down
with a God's eye view of the [memorial] fountain and it's going to be the water
of the
fountain. And, ultimately, the water is going to be turned off as we hear the
voice over that
brings us into the picture. You're going to see the totality of the picture, go
through this
incredible emotional experience, and then, the film will conclude with the water
being
turned back on as is the ritual of this community… basically in keeping with the
first day
of Spring. To me, hope springs eternal. With that shot, I want to show as many
of the
citizens of Huntington, as many of the people who were there as possible. That's
going to
be a great way to tell the world to keep on truckin'."

More Info on the movie:]

Marshall filming to start in March

Matthew Thompson
Daily Mail staff

Monday January 30, 2006

A movie detailing the aftermath of the 1970 Marshall University
plane crash will start filming March 20 in Huntington with Matthew
McConaughey starring, according to the producer of the project.

Basil Iwanyk will produce the as-of-yet unnamed film for Warner
Bros. Pictures. The director will be Joseph McGinty Nichol, who goes
by "McG" and is known for his work on the "Charlie's Angels" film
series and music videos by Korn and Sugar Ray.

McConaughey, star of such films as "A Time to Kill" and "Amistad"
will star as head coach Jack Lengyel. Lengyel led a rebuilt football
team the season following the tragedy.

Iwanyk, 36, said the film would capture the repercussions the school
and Huntington faced while recovering from the plane crash that
killed 75 people including 37 members of the football team.

"This project is a labor of love for all of us involved," Iwanyk
said in a Sunday telephone interview.

The film's genesis began two years ago when Iwanyk and his
production staff were pitching ideas at Warner Bros. Iwanyk brought
up a story of a 1958 plane crash in Munich, Germany, which killed
eight Manchester United soccer players along with various
journalists and team officials

While discussing it, Iwanyk and his executives were reminded about
the Marshall plane crash. Iwanyk said the crash story was familiar
to him, but he didn't know much more beyond the lives it claimed.

"The more we did research, we realized that this was a story you
could not make up," Iwanyk said. "The story was just so emotional,
it just made sense."

On Nov. 14, 1970, on the way back from a loss to East Carolina
University, Marshall's charter plane crashed while trying to land
during a rainy night at Tri-State Airport in Huntington. Along with
the players, the crash claimed the lives of the coaches, flight
crew, team boosters and journalists covering the team.

The team rebuilt the following season behind new head coach Lengyel,
who took the Marshall position after leaving Wooster College in
Ohio.

With a collection of freshman and transfer students, the football
team pulled an upset its second game of the season over a heavily
favored Xavier team. The young Thundering Herd won 12-10 on the last
play of the game. Marshall won two games that year.

After working a year and a half on the script with screenwriter
Jamie Linden, the filmmakers went to Huntington to approach Marshall
University officials about the project.

Keith Spears, Marshall's vice president of marketing and
communication, said many studios approached the school in the past
about making a film about the tragedy. Spears said Warner Bros. was
chosen because it guaranteed putting time and money into the project
to make it as accurate as possible.

"We have been impressed with the crew because they have come with
right attitude," Spears said. "We wanted to make sure that the film
made would respect and honor the people who died in the crash along
with their relatives and friends."

The filmmakers spent many months of research in the Huntington area.
School officials opened up Marshall's archives to the filmmakers.
They also put them in touch with many individuals related to the
crash including Herald-Dispatch sportswriter Ernie Salvatore and
WSAZ sportscaster Keith Morehouse. Morehouse lost his father, Gene,
a play-by-play announcer for the team, in the crash.

Iwanyk said the local people involved were a little skeptical about
the project, but the crew assured them the film would be made with
utmost respect and accuracy.

"They put us through the ringer asking us all sorts of questions,"
Iwanyk said. "We just wanted to assure them that we weren't making
up fake stuff. The story speaks for itself."

The crew even attended a Marshall football game last fall, and
Iwanyk met Gov. Joe Manchin. He said the governor and state
officials have been key in getting the film off the ground.

"He searched me out, came up and shook my hand," Iwanyk said. "The
state and the governor have been extremely helpful with this movie."

The film will begin shooting around the Marshall campus before
moving on to Atlanta for further production. A release date has not
been set for the film.

It sure feels good. Over at HerdFans.com I found the best post every. Pud calls

Vingle!!!!!!!....

Pud says = "First off guys what spin will you put on this? Tired? No rivalry

Jughead)? Bad rims? Food poisoning?

A few days ago that A**munch Beckner who writes for the Gagette said next year
WVu's

......5!!! All by
Belien who is a SR. Over under for WVu wins next year 8. Beckner thank you for
trying now
go back to your real job....Glory Hole maintaince man...

DHickman .....maybe you can now pull your head out of Belien's a**. I expect
this drivel
from you though.....what shot will you take at MU now? Bottom line your "guy"
has been
schooled by Jirsa two years in a row. What is your response to that?

Now for Mitch....just quit. Do us all a favor and leave. You have no credibilty
and what few
(if any) writing skills you possess are gone. You are a hack. Just slink out of
town, like
Catlett did...and go away. The curtain has been pulled back, and it aint pretty.
Take your
big chipmunk and toothy grin and shut the hell up....just leave.

Finally for that other Gagette writer Phil Kabler...F YOU!!!!! Keep your little
put downs to
yourself. Stick to finding out who at the statehouse bought Post it Notes
without a
competitive bid. You snivling little bung hole, I hope you are in the fetal
position for the
next month.

Congrats Herd......RUB IT IN ON ALL THESE ARROGANT A'HOLES...THEY DESERVE

According to the Charleston Gazette... GAZETTE-MAIL: I almost hate to bring this
up: What
about all those Bobby Huggins rumors? Any truth to them, and is he fit to take
another
college job?

MARCUM: I don't know if "he's fit to take another job" or not. That's really
none of my
business whether he is or isn't. Those kinds of things I think are very, very
disappointing.
Somewhere along the way, I just don't think those things all of a sudden happen.
I think
people plan them, they get involved in it. I feel bad for coach [Ron] Jirsa to
have to go
through something like that.

At the same time, I had to laugh when I first got the call in regards to all
those rumors
going around. I didn't know if we were in second place or third place, as far as
the jobs go.
A person told me that, I just know that this individual is interested in your
job, but he's
also interested in the Pitt job, also. You know, the thing that I find that I
really think it says
a lot of negative things about our business, and especially the sport of
basketball when
you hear about people quote, right or wrong. And I'm not going after people's
jobs. It's
not even open.

I just have more respect for the game of college basketball and the coaching
profession to
think there are people are doing those kinds of things.

(Note: Since the interview, Huggins has contacted Marcum, which Marcum
acknowledged.)

Rumor: October 25, 2005 - Pruett to Kentucky?
Daily Mail started a rumor yesterday that Pruett might be going to Kentucky and
taking
some of his coaching staff from Marshall with him. Don't know if there's any
truth to this,
but Kentucky was excited enough about it to post in the Lexington Herald as
well.

Hey all,

I'm not a fan that jumped on the bandwagon in the
90's. I can't even count the miles I've travelled
watching the Herd play all over the country. I give
the the Big Green, and watch them win or lose. I
would NEVER bash the Herd in front of outsiders or
turn my back on them. I see the Herd Nation as a kind
of family that can pick on each other and be honest,
but defend each other to outsiders.

I'm not going to sit here and say that we are a good
team this year, nor were we since Byron left. But I
still give, pay to watch them on the internet (since I
live in NC), and check Herdzone.com everyday.
