News: May 29, 2004 - Herd Plays for National Championship. As written on
HerdZone.com. ATHENS, Ga. - Marshall University's doubles team of Jessica
Johnson and
Ashley Kroh continued its historic run at the NCAA Doubles National
Championship with a
come-from-behind victory on Friday. The Thundering Herd All-Americans defeated
the
University of New Mexico's eighth-ranked tandem of Sandy Lukowski and Maja
Kovacek
(3-6, 6-3, 7-5) at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex to
advance to
Saturday's 2:30 p.m. National Championship match.
"Unbelievable," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "With all the attention
and pressure,
Jessica and Ashley did what they had to do to win. It was a battle of nerves and
we were
able to pull it out."
"The thing that won that match was desire," Marshall's Kroh said. "We didn't
play our best,
but we really, really wanted it. I am playing for an NCAA Championship, it is
our wildest
dream come true."
