Well, OK ... maybe I should elaborate a bit on that.
I gambled on a three-hour trip up to Prospect Mountain, which is a bit east
of Bennington on VT Rt 9. It actually wasn't much of a gamble since
Prospect Mountain typically has as much snow as most spots at least 100
miles further north. Their webs site lists a base depth of 18-30", which
might be an exaggeration, but not by much. The snow was what you'd call
old corn snow, which is actually a hell of a lot of fun since it's fast but
controllable. You needed klister for classic skiing, but waxless skis also
worked really well since even waxless skis have adequate glide in this kind
of snow. The temperature was probably right around freezing or maybe a bit
higher in the afternoon, but the snow remained fairly fast all
day. Skating was delightful since it's almost effortless in these
conditions ... at least until you try to skate up any reasonable hills.
Baring a meltdown of unprecedented proportions they'll probably have good
snow from now through April, so if you're looking for a day-trip XC
destination this is the place for now. When you get tired of skiing
Prospect has a really comfortable lodge, probably because it used to be a
downhill resort many years ago.
