I saw only scant traces of snow along Rt 7 during the 2 1/2 hr drive to
Bennington , Vt.. This X-ctry touring center (www.prospectmountain.com)
claimed 1-7 inches on 25Km . The 7 mi drive east of town along Rt 9 winds to
a base elevation of about 2100 ft . The trail pass was discounted $2 due to
less than perfect conditions , meaning some of the expert telemark trails
were not officially open . The rolling trail system skirts the base of
prospect Mtn and winds thru the Green Mtn National forest. The truly
adventurous can climb (herringbone) the expert trails to the 2600 ft peak
for a backcountry experience . Skaters from local high school and college
train here sometime wiping the tracks . Even the "Easier" trails have a
grade that will challange climbing and pooling skills. The hardpack made for
fast but slippery conditions . My metal edged backcountry skis side slipped
a bit , but carved turns were easier.
The rental shop is well equipped with all variety of ski
(skate, classic, telemark)as well as snowshoes. In fact , I was tempted to
enter the 10Km snowshoe race that made two loops the top. The area is well
run and sponser several races throught the season . Bennington has some nice
restaurants - the Madison Ale house is my favorite-to replace those
kilo-calories .
