Hey Gang

In addition to my annual Spring Mt Biking trip to Moab & Fruita, Fiona is
renting the place next door and leading the trip below.

Cheers

Hiking South Eastern Utah & Southern Colorado
April 22nd – May 1st 2005
8 Days of Hiking and Exploring
$550.00 includes accommodations and ground transportation in Utah & Colorado

Spend 8 days of hiking and exploring in and around the glorious sun drenched
desert and red rock canyons of Southeastern Utah and Southwestern Colorado.

Taste a little part of this expansive and seemingly endless fragile landscape
which makes up Southern Utah and the surrounding desert region known as the
southwest. From the fragile Cryptobiotic crust, which holds this landscape
together, to the uranium super sites resulting from exploitation of this
region’s
natural resources, to historic Monkey Wrench Gangs and surreal landscapes with
red sandstone monoliths, this is the stuff of naturalist writers like Edward
Abbey and abstract artists like Salvatore Dali!

Our home base will be a vacation rental in Moab Utah known as “Grandma’s
House”. Moab is a southwestern town filled with the history and lore of the
dramatic old West. The group will conduct daily outings from Grandma’s and
possibly (with enough interest) take an overnight in the charming old frontier
town
of Fruita Colorado. In Fruita you can enjoy a lazy breakfast amongst several of
Fruita’s cowpokes in the local café or fill-up on some of the local Java
before heading out for the days trek into Colorado’s Black Ridge Canyons
Wilderness Area.

You may wonder what type of hiker and adventurer you should be for this trip.
You must be in good physical condition and at least an intermediate hiker.
There will be regrouping on hikes and it will not feel like a competition.
Don’t
be concerned about being dropped.

Here’s a short list of hikes and attractions:
Arches National Park
Sand Flats Conservation Area, Moab Utah
The Fiery Furness, Arches National Park
Dead Horse Point, Moab UT
Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness Area CO
Goblin Valley State Park, Green River, Utah
Canyonlands National Park
Hidden Valley, Moab Utah

Chow is never a problem in Moab or Fruita. Both towns are filled with great
eateries and a variety of menus for the pickiest or the budget conscious
traveler. There is also a full kitchen at Grandma’s house. And, even though
Grandma
is no longer around to perform any of her culinary feats, the opportunity
exists for the group to take turns at cooking each other meals should you so d
esire.

If I didn’t mention it already, Moab also has a great movie house (just a
short walk from Grandma’s) as well as two excellent grocery stores and many
interesting gift shops and art galleries. There will also be an opportunity to
do a
some easy Mountain Biking or sample some of the local rafting. Some of life’s
little necessities at Grandma’s, washer and dryer and three bathrooms where
there’s always plenty of hot water.
