Similar to Mark's comment of three weeks ago, I can say that if you weren't
at Prospect this weekend you missed some of the best skiing ever --- but
the good news is it'll likely be around for at least a few more
weekends. I skated for over 3 hours on Sunday and I really can't think of
anything that would have made it better. The temps were in the 20's, clear
sky, no wind, fresh snow covering the pine branches, and the snow was fast,
firm, and controllable -- really, what else could you ask for?? Although I
skated all day, the classic tracks looked to be in great shape, and those
skiing classic were doing quite well with normal hard wax (especially with
a binder underneath). Apparently they'd gotten about 5 inches of new snow
on Friday making the classic conditions on Saturday really good. By Sunday
the new snow had settled making it nearly perfect.
I actually skied Lapland Lake on Saturday, then drove over to Bennington to
spend the night so I could be clipped into my skis by 9am at Prospect. I
think the serpentine trails at Lapland Lake are more interesting and scenic
than the wider trails with frequent intersections at Prospect, but the snow
conditions and grooming are almost always much better at Prospect. Anyway,
don't hang up those skis yet because there's still some good snow to be had.
