Ralph,

There probably is but I'm not up on where the trails might be. Any ski
guidebook covering the White Mountains will have trails within a few minutes
drive of Crawford Notch. Modern skiing in this country started in the Whites
in the 20's. The very first professional ski school in North America was in
Franconia (Inn at Strawberry Hill, I believe). Canon was a ski area befor the
CCC cut trails on Wildcat, Cranmore and Tecumseh (Waterville Valley)
Backcountry skiing is available - it just might not be out the door of the
Highland Center.

If you want to backcountry ski out the door of an AMC facility, I would
suggest the Joe Dodge Lodge at Pinkham Notch. There are trails that go south
to Jackson along the Ellis (sp?) River, the Old Jackson Road goes north, the
Wildcat Valley Trail (off the back of Wildcat going down to Jackson - 3000
vertical feet), plus the Sherborn Trail coming down out of Tuckermann Ravine.
Tuckermann and the eastern side of Mt. Washington is possibly the ultimate
backcountry experience, all out the door of Pinkham Notch (or very close).
Everyone should ski Tuck at least once. :-)

Many people also ski into the huts that are open year around - Zealand Falls
and Carter Notch. Both buts are open on a caretaker basis during the winter.

Sorry - I get carried away with ski history sometimes.

Jim
