Hello everyone,
We spent most of last week at AMC's new Highland Center in Crawford Notch and
skied both alpine and Nordic at Bretton Woods. We even did a little snow
shoeing. There is nothing that a little snow wouldn't cure at Bretton Woods.
We skied early in the week and they have an excellent base with great
grooming. Our first run was down the trail off the back side of the Bretton
Woods alpine area. Your XC trail pass is good for one ride up the lift. The
trails had not been groomed in a least three days, so the snow was fast but
quite skiable. Of course we met the groomer at the bottom. We then crossed
the street and spent the afternoon on the regular Nordic trails which were
excellent. The weather was fantastic and we sat for half an hour enjoying the
view of Mt Washington from the deck outside the yurt on Corronary Hill. The
ride down the Corronary Hills trail was delightful if not terribly exciting.
The Alpine skiing at Bretton Woods was also delightful if not terribly
exciting. Bretton Woods has added a new "peak" and bills themselves as the
"largest ski area in NH". What they do have is some wonderful glades for
skiers of all abilities.
The AMC Highland Center is my new favorite NH destination. We are already
planning an AMC/HCC trip up there for next February. Take Pinkham Notch and
stir in a heathy dose of the Trapp Family Lodge and you have the Highland
Center. We stayed in a room with a private bath and a DSL Internet
connection! (It never occurred to me to bring an ethernet card.) The typical
room is more like Pinkham with four or six bunks and the bath down the hall.
You can get wine or beer with dinner - how civilized! Bretton Woods has
extended the trail system up the Notch to the Highland Center so the skiing
is essentially out the door.
We also snowshoed and XC skied in or near Waterville Valley. They have much
less snow than up in Crawford Notch.
Jim
