I know several people who have switched from cars to bicycle commuting recently. Mostly you see them riding on sidewalks. I try to gently give them hints on how to ride in traffic.
It takes a lot more people on bicycles before you notice a reduction in cars. I figure less than 1% of the vehicle mileage on O’ahu is attributable to bicycles, probably closer to .1%. Even 10 times more bicycles will make little impact on the number of cars, BUT, ten times more bicycles will make us harder to ignore – I actually think you get a critical mass with only about 2% of the vehicle miles done by bicycles - critical mass in the sense that bicycles have to be taken seriously and the politicians realize that if they don’t fix the infrastructure so we have our own space cars are going to be limited to about 12 mph on every road on the island except the interstates (actually – at rush hour they are lucky now if they can average 12 mph!).

Subject: [hawaiibicyclists] Gas
Prices
I find it interesting how the general public has
become so concerned
with gas prices that the reduction in price of a
gallon of gasoline by
so much as a PENNY makes it into the news.

I have noticed more bicycles on the road since
fuel prices started
spiking, though there dont seem to really be fewer
cars.
