Master Jeff West is a great guy.I met and attended his seminar when he was a guest hapkido seminar instructor at Dr.He-Young Kimm's Hanmudo seminar back in 1996 at World Hanmudo Association HQ at Baton Rouge ,Louisiana. One can tell a good master from his students behavior and techs. Master Jeff's students are great in personlities and techs.
We went out lunch together with Dr.Kimm and his love for hapkido is so great that I remembered his car license plate as HAPKIDO.
Subject: [Hapkido Flying Eagle] Self-Defense Seminar in Austin, TX on April 23, 2005
Fellow Martial Artist,
One of the greatest opportunities one can find in their martial arts journey is the opportunity to study with great instructors. I have been fortunate to attend several seminars across the country as I have endeavored to expand my self-defense skills and curriculum. One of the finest instructors that I have found in these trips is Grand Master JR West. I and my instructors have had the opportunity to train with Master West several times and have benefited tremendously from the experience. After a year of saving and planning we have finally made arrangements for Master West to come to Austin.
Master West has studied Hapkido for more than 30 years and holds the rank of 8th Dan with the Korea HapKiDo Association and is the President of the United States Korean Martial Arts Federation. Dr. He-Young Kimm, an early pioneer of Korean Martial Arts in America, calls Master West “an outstanding instructor and leader in the martial arts community.” Major W. Wadsworth of the U.S Army at Fort Benning said, “The level of your instructors truly impressed me. Their professional demeanor and obvious commitment to excellence ensure the success of this program.” You can see written letters of reference for Master West at http://www.hapkido.com/uskmaf.htm.
Master West will be coming to Austin with a team of five instructors to conduct and all day self-defense/Hapkido seminar. This seminar is open to all styles and all ranks. Students 12 years and older can attend the entire seminar. There will be a special separate session for children ages 6-11 that will last two hours.
The seminar topics will include a variety of subjects such as: joint locks, chokes, ki-strikes, take downs, pressure points, rope techniques etc… The seminar topics will be based upon the needs of the group that attends that day. The children’s session will present exciting and appropriate material for young children.
You can find more information about the seminar on our site at www.natkd.com/events including two online videos that show the Masters’ Demonstrations from two of Master West’s previous seminars.
It is my sincerest hope that you or some of your representatives can attend this event of learning and sharing. It is my goal to create network of martial artists that come together in fellowship to learn, share, and compete in a friendly and positive environment. We host four events a year at North Austin Tae Kwon Do, two seminars and two friendship tournaments, all these events to open to all ranks and all styles.
Enclosed you will find flyers with applications for the seminar printed on the reveres side as well as a certificate for one free admission with one paid admission.

Everyone had a good, fun time at the Hanmudo Association Singapore Ubin Adventure Resort Training Camp over the Hari Raya Haji holidays. The camp was on Jan 21-22 ' 05.
Topics covered by Dr.Dennis Chua on the first day was Hanmudo knife defence techniques,Knife combat, Sand Spreading techniques, knife throwing and Seven Star Praying Mantis Wushu .Master Jeffrey Fleury was assisting Dr.Chua.Despite the scorching afternoon sun and hot sand, the trainees showed mental focus in their training, ignoring the blistering hot sand under their bare feet.
The second day morning , we had Taekyun ,Han Teuk Keuk (Han Tai Chi) and Pushing hands and chinna ( wushu wrist locks).
The general comment at the camp- it was too short, a longer period will be better.
More camps will follow in the future ,with more days.

Hanmudo Founder,Dr.He- Young Kimm is featured in Jan 2005 Taekwondo Times magazine as one of 4 grandmasters in the 2004 Hall of Fame chosen by martial artists worldwide for their teaching and promotion of Korean arts .You can get this magazine at bookshops Borders or Kinokuniya in Singapore.
Dr.Kimm is planning to lead a group for a trip to China Shaolin and North Korea ITF TKD Palace for training and exchange in April 2005.
Thanks Edmund. I really enjoyed yesterday's seminar. It's interesting to learn that some of the techniques and philosophies in Hanmudo are similar to Aikido. I'm glad to have a taste of what Hanmudo is about. How nice if we can have more martial artists from all disciplinces to attend such seminars.
Who knows. I might one day enroll as a beginner in Dr Chua's class.

Yahoo! Mail is new and improved - Check it out!
We had a fabulous hanmudo seminar down under in Sydney.(Aug 7,8 2004). Hanmudo Australia members and Australia Hapkido Group members plus a couple of Hanmudo Singapore members participated under GM He- Young Kimm (Hanmudo Founder) . Very well organised by Master Keyvan Mirzai ,Australia Hanmudo head.
Before the seminar ,Master Kirvan brought us to see the sights in Sydney. We had beautiful sunny cool weather despite being winter. We then visited Little Korea town at a town in Campsie.Had lunch at a Korean inn with old Korean men sitting down having their lunch.-really like in Seoul.Mrs.Kimm had a fine time doing shopping and conversing in Korean with the shopkeepers.
At dinner,Master Kirvan's lovely wife Anna , cooked for us a splendid Italian and Lebanese dinner, which highlight the multi ethnicity of Australia. Her Lasagne was perfect. So was her Lebanese rice bread. We finished with Aussie mandarin oranges ,cheese cake and capuccino.Even Dr.Kimm ,who said he needed to sleep for his jetlag, could not resist the fragrant coffee aroma that Mrs.Mirzai brewed for us.
The following day was serious training day.As there were Hapkido members around,GM Kimm highlighted the uniqueness of Hanmudo as distinct from Hapkido. He stressed Hanmudo is principle based , as distinct from technique based. He covered the martial directions, how to generate power from different body parts, Ki breathing for attaining alpha mind status, and how ancient techs from Muyedobo Tong ji is used for modern day application in Hanmudo eg Mu Han Dae movements in defence and attacks.
It was then practice sessions for muhande application in kicking ,striking, combination throwing and combination locking. He then taught Takyun rhythm for use in sparring .
We stopped for lunch and Dr.Kimm had some time talking with some senior members of Australia Hapkido group, who last met Dr.Kimm in 1996 when he first came to Sydney.
In the afternoon , we practiced Taekyun martial rhythm and used it for all the applications as for sparring. We learnt knee unbalancing for throws etc.As with all Hanmudo seminars ,time is always not enough. It was getting dark and we stopped training around 5.30pm.
The seniors had their special training after the seminar.Dr.Kimm went thru with Master Keyvan his 4th dan requirement-counter locks ,rope ,cane , head butt etc.Dr.Dennis Chua ,Singapore Hanmudo head, learnt his 6th dan requirement- archery techs, knife and stone throwing, and sand spreading.
Mrs.Kimm and Anna surprised us at dinner when they prepared a fabulous Korean bulbogi dinner and Kimchi using wholesome Australian beef and fresh Aussie vegies.Do I need to say more???
Sunday came and we had Kumdo training(Korean swordmanship). We went thru basic cutting movements, as well as sword footworks.Confusing initially, but very effective in Kumdo sparring. We learnt the oldest Korean swordform ,Bon kok Kum ,as well as Hanmudo basic swordform ,Hanmu Kum il Hyung. We had a fun session of Kumdo sparring .Control was impt. as we did not wear any protective armour.
I asked Dr.Kimm which is the emphasis for Hanmudo-pole or sword. He replied sword is the emphasis, as it is considered the "fashion" in Korean arts nowadays. I take it to mean it is considered an elite "warrior scholar " weapon as compared to the "footsoldier " pole weapon. But I also realise hanmudo movements of foot and hand now is resembling the sword movement.ie remove the sword and your hand movement is actually sword movement.
Grading was next.Master Keyvan and his assistant instructor performed very well for their 4th dan and 2nd dan respectively.Singapore's Wong Kah Heng did very well for his first dan. Kah Heng by the way has also started Hanmudo Thailand.Dr.Dennis Chua ,Singapore head , had the priviledge to be requested by Dr.Kimm to present the participants and the successful test candidates their certificates.
Master Keyvan and Dr.Chua had a proposal to Dr.Kimm to conduct seminars in alternate years in Singapore and Australia. In this way,Hanmudo standard will improve in this region.Already yr 2005 Nov. seminar is in the pipeline, and Aussies guests will be coming to S'pore to participate . After the S'pore seminar, partipants may be going to Pattaya,Thailand for the Thailand Hanmudo Seminar.
As I have attended numerous Hanmudo seminars and observing Hanmudo development over these years,I am happy to say Hanmudo is really growing, at a steady pace the world over. And quality and brotherhood among world wide members is the aim, not politics and certainly not confrontational. That is the Hanmudo spirit.
Han
Dr.Dennis Chua
Hanmudo Singapore
ps Over dinner,Mrs.Kimm proudly announced that Dr.Kimm had passed his 9th Dan Yudo exams last year but did not announced it.Dr.Kimm is really humble. He just smiled. So as with all Singapore Hanmudo members - Congratulations to Dojunim on achieving the 9th Dan Black Belt in Yudo.
