We had a fabulous hanmudo seminar down under in Sydney.(Aug 7,8 2004). Hanmudo Australia members and Australia Hapkido Group members plus a couple of Hanmudo Singapore members participated under GM He- Young Kimm (Hanmudo Founder) . Very well organised by Master Keyvan Mirzai ,Australia Hanmudo head.
Before the seminar ,Master Kirvan brought us to see the sights in Sydney. We had beautiful sunny cool weather despite being winter. We then visited Little Korea town at a town in Campsie.Had lunch at a Korean inn with old Korean men sitting down having their lunch.-really like in Seoul.Mrs.Kimm had a fine time doing shopping and conversing in Korean with the shopkeepers.
At dinner,Master Kirvan's lovely wife Anna , cooked for us a splendid Italian and Lebanese dinner, which highlight the multi ethnicity of Australia. Her Lasagne was perfect. So was her Lebanese rice bread. We finished with Aussie mandarin oranges ,cheese cake and capuccino.Even Dr.Kimm ,who said he needed to sleep for his jetlag, could not resist the fragrant coffee aroma that Mrs.Mirzai brewed for us.
The following day was serious training day.As there were Hapkido members around,GM Kimm highlighted the uniqueness of Hanmudo as distinct from Hapkido. He stressed Hanmudo is principle based , as distinct from technique based. He covered the martial directions, how to generate power from different body parts, Ki breathing for attaining alpha mind status, and how ancient techs from Muyedobo Tong ji is used for modern day application in Hanmudo eg Mu Han Dae movements in defence and attacks.
It was then practice sessions for muhande application in kicking ,striking, combination throwing and combination locking. He then taught Takyun rhythm for use in sparring .
We stopped for lunch and Dr.Kimm had some time talking with some senior members of Australia Hapkido group, who last met Dr.Kimm in 1996 when he first came to Sydney.
In the afternoon , we practiced Taekyun martial rhythm and used it for all the applications as for sparring. We learnt knee unbalancing for throws etc.As with all Hanmudo seminars ,time is always not enough. It was getting dark and we stopped training around 5.30pm.
The seniors had their special training after the seminar.Dr.Kimm went thru with Master Keyvan his 4th dan requirement-counter locks ,rope ,cane , head butt etc.Dr.Dennis Chua ,Singapore Hanmudo head, learnt his 6th dan requirement- archery techs, knife and stone throwing, and sand spreading.
Mrs.Kimm and Anna surprised us at dinner when they prepared a fabulous Korean bulbogi dinner and Kimchi using wholesome Australian beef and fresh Aussie vegies.Do I need to say more???
Sunday came and we had Kumdo training(Korean swordmanship). We went thru basic cutting movements, as well as sword footworks.Confusing initially, but very effective in Kumdo sparring. We learnt the oldest Korean swordform ,Bon kok Kum ,as well as Hanmudo basic swordform ,Hanmu Kum il Hyung. We had a fun session of Kumdo sparring .Control was impt. as we did not wear any protective armour.
I asked Dr.Kimm which is the emphasis for Hanmudo-pole or sword. He replied sword is the emphasis, as it is considered the "fashion" in Korean arts nowadays. I take it to mean it is considered an elite "warrior scholar " weapon as compared to the "footsoldier " pole weapon. But I also realise hanmudo movements of foot and hand now is resembling the sword movement.ie remove the sword and your hand movement is actually sword movement.
Grading was next.Master Keyvan and his assistant instructor performed very well for their 4th dan and 2nd dan respectively.Singapore's Wong Kah Heng did very well for his first dan. Kah Heng by the way has also started Hanmudo Thailand.Dr.Dennis Chua ,Singapore head , had the priviledge to be requested by Dr.Kimm to present the participants and the successful test candidates their certificates.
Master Keyvan and Dr.Chua had a proposal to Dr.Kimm to conduct seminars in alternate years in Singapore and Australia. In this way,Hanmudo standard will improve in this region.Already yr 2005 Nov. seminar is in the pipeline, and Aussies guests will be coming to S'pore to participate . After the S'pore seminar, partipants may be going to Pattaya,Thailand for the Thailand Hanmudo Seminar.
As I have attended numerous Hanmudo seminars and observing Hanmudo development over these years,I am happy to say Hanmudo is really growing, at a steady pace the world over. And quality and brotherhood among world wide members is the aim, not politics and certainly not confrontational. That is the Hanmudo spirit.

Hanmudo Singapore
ps Over dinner,Mrs.Kimm proudly announced that Dr.Kimm had passed his 9th Dan Yudo exams last year but did not announced it.Dr.Kimm is really humble. He just smiled. So as with all Singapore Hanmudo members - Congratulations to Dojunim on achieving the 9th Dan Black Belt in Yudo.

I read this good article from Grandmaster Han's Europe Global Hapkido site, which I think good students should have this attitude of learning
See below
DrChua
If you want to be a good fighter, then spend six months on the city streets and fight. Actually basic white belt techniques are good enough to defend yourself, so why do we continue to study? Beyond physical techniques, hapkido teaches us to perceive the truth.
There was a monk who asked one disciple, "whenever you see dirt, clean it away". Whereever the disciple would go everything would gleam - because he'd constantly be cleaning and shining. Through this work the disciple became enlightened. He realised that in this manner he must also cleanse his mind.
This is why we have discipline and why we bow. We bow to our instructor but it is not for his benefit. Through this bowing process we learn to empty our minds and concentrate. When we concentrate we are aware of everything that happens; every noise, and every action.
We must be one with what we are doing. If we enjoy a book, then we are not conscious of time passing. Likewise, we must concentrate totally during class and be able to translate this concentration to our daily lives - by aspiring to be constantly in the here and now.
When we concentrate our minds we should never ask to be taught more techniques. In time we understand that these are secondary. Within our daily practice we are learning the most effective lesson of all, self-defense against ourselves and an awakening to reality.
Global Hapkido Federation is headed by GM Han Jung Do.
His teacher is the late GM Myung Jae Nam , head of International Hapkido Federation (IHF).GM Han is also the nephew of GM Myung.GM Myung is a student of Yong Sul Choi and Ji Han Jae,but also has a cooperation with Aikido's Ueshiba. He combined the techs of both Aikido and Hapkido into his style.
See this family tree link of Yong Sul Choi-Ji Han Jae- Myung Jae Nam - Han Jung Do.
GM Han is also general secretary of Korea Hanmudo Association and together with GM He- Young Kimm of Hanmudo, and other grandmasters, form the Traditioanl Korean Martial Art Association.
Previously, the 3 main Hapkido organisations in Korea, recognised by Korean govt. is Korea Hapkido Federation, Korea Kido Hwe and International Hapkido Federation.
After the death of GM Myung , IHF broke up.One of his notable students form a new art ,Han Ki Do. Other masters recombined under GM Han 's leadership to form World Hapkido Games Federation. The first World Games ,which Hanmudo participated , was in 1997 in Korea. This is a landmark event in Hapkido , as Hapkido never had international sport competition before. There were jumping kick competition, breaking , breakfall, Hapkido forms, weapons, self defense( Ho Shin Sul) and sparring.

The differnce in style of GHF with KHF is a more softer style, no doubt still painful. There are more weapons forms, as compared to KHF. Also there are forms . KHF does not have sparring in their formal curriculum. There are more Ki exercises than KHF.
So basically ,GHF style is intended for overall health and fun hapkido martial art, rather than a deadly martial art.

With all these Last Samurai craze, thot I will like to highlight the Korean Samurai (Sam Rang)which historically is earlier than the Japanese samurai, and influence the development of the Bushido code in Japan in 6th century.
Kumdo,Korean swordsmanship, is also practiced in Hanmudo,as Hanmudo trains for attainment of "Swordsmanship and Penmanship".Even tho competition is similar to Kendo, the Japanese version, sword forms differ between Japanese and Korean.
Below is a link to the Korea website.Unfortunately its in Korean.
Hi,

Interesting to know that Sport Hapkido has recently come up.
Dr Chua, Does GHF has a website that we can take a look?
Thanks.
Master Anthony Low Chuan Wee is the representative for Korea Hapkido
Federation in Singapore.
Interested parties are welcome to visit Master Low's website at

Dr.Kelly ,an expert on Dim mak (pressure point ) and a medical neurologist, is doing a research on dim mak. Please help him complete the survey below (link below) so that he can compile his data for his dimmak research ,purpose is to make dim mak practice safer for everyone.
Thank you for your help. I would appreciate if you could spread the word about the survey to your students. I have already gotten a great response, but the more data the better.
I am conducting research on the long term effects of striking pressure points during practice. I would appreciate if you would be so kind as to take the time to fill out a 1 minute survey. The survey is completely anonymous. The results of this study will be published and available for all members. Just click on the link below to complete this quick survey.
Took a look at the Tukong Musul site. Ebe Ghansa, who heads it in UK, is a good friend of mine and in fact trained with Dr. Kimm in around 1994 with a view to taking on Hanmudo.
For Hanmudo International members who took part in the 2001 Korea-Japan seminar, the championships that we took part in was organised by the International TeukGong Moo Sool Federation .
From what we have witnessed it is a combination of Kuk sool and Hapkido with Korean Chinese influenced forms.
Subject: [HanMuDo] Chinese New Year and the passage of time
I am a monkey. I've now seen three cycles of the Chinese zodiac, meaning that come May 25, I'll be 3x12, or 36 years old.
I'm married to a beautiful Chinese woman. Without her, I would have been unaware of the Chinese New Year, it is simply not celebrated widely in the United States.
The turning of the Chinese Zodiac's 12 year cycle makes me reflect upon the changes I've seen in the relatively short time I've been around. I've been studying HanMuDo continuously
since September of 1990. At the time I started, Dr. Kimm had not settled upon the name HanMuDo, it was then being called
'Yu Kwon Sul'. Shortly after I started study is when he settled upon the name, but the curriculum was still in flux. When I started, there were 10 techniques
per set. Now there are twelve and for the first few years, the order and construction of the techniques where being changed every few months as Dr. Kimm used
the Baton Rouge, LA headquarters school as a living laboratory.
Though the official techniques are now set down in the HanMuDo textbook, he still uses the BR school and his instructors as living laboratories, constantly
growing, changing and evolving as he, and we, learn and become more capable. It is exciting to be part of a living, breathing martial art that accepts and
embraces change. Dr. Kimm has said to his instructors many times that he has laid down the direction and the basics. It is up to us to evolve and grow the
techniques, forms and concepts.
I have been reading the biography of Grandmaster Choi, Hong-Hi, the founder of TaeKwonDo. TaeKwonDo has evolved from it's roots in Japanese Karate to a fully independent, unique martial art that is one of the most widely practiced arts in the world. HanMuDo has the same potential.
The HanMuDo of today is demonstrably better than the HanMuDo of 1990. It is exciting to reflect upon what the the HanMuDo of 2050 may be like.
I hope that I am still living to see it, and hopefully, to contribute to it's growth. Dr. Kimm has given us a serious, ambitious goal. To take HanMuDo from the it's
infancy to adulthood. Much like Hapkido and TaeKwonDo, which have changed and grown over the years, we can expect HanMuDo to change and evolve. It is up to us to grow HanMuDo beyond the lifetime of it's founder.
It's a heady challenge.
