About the Instructors: James Alexander Overton was
born in San Francisco, California, August 19th, 1963.
After traveling extensively throughout the continental
United States, his family moved to Europe in 1971
where he began his martial arts training at the age of
13. Thrust onto the gang-infested mean streets of
southern Europe, James found ample opportunity to put
his martial skills to the test, often in encounters
against boxers and other martial arts stylists. In
addition to many scars, these experiences gave him an
eclectic reality-based perspective on hand-to-hand
combat still present in his training regimen today. In
1981, at 18 years of age, James returned to North
America, residing in several major cities in Eastern
Canada where he trained extensively in many arts,
including Tae kwon do, Judo, amateur boxing, and
professional (PKA) kick-boxing, among others. In 1990,
based on his extensive and eclectic training
experience and street-fighting knowledge, he founded
and taught the art originally known as Black Mamba,
later renamed Mamba-RyuTM.
In 1995, after completing a Bachelor of Arts, Honors,
and a Master of Arts degree from Queen’s University in
Canada, James moved to California in order to pursue
graduate work at the University of California at San
Diego. He graduated from UCSD with a Master of
Science degree in Cognitive Science, while
simultaneously completing a second Bachelor degree in
General Science (“pre-medicine”) through the
University of Waterloo. During the years following
his return to California, in addition to his own
martial studies and academic work, James dedicated
himself to training and coaching his son Jimmy (James,
Jr.) through an illustrious competitive career in
grappling sports, including several United States and
Canadian Judo championships, a California State
championship in Brazilian Jujutsu, and positions on
the Stanford wrestling team and the Canadian Junior
Men’s Judo World Championship Team. In 1999, 2000, and
2001, James was awarded the prestigious Best Coach
award in Canadian Judo for excellence in coaching.
Currently, James is pursuing his Ph.D. in
Clinical and Health Psychology, completing an advanced
professional executive protection program, and working
part-time as a hypnotherapist. His dissertation
research centers on the neurobiological basis of the
imagination and imaginary states of the mind-brain.
James has published ground-breaking and award winning
articles in the fields of Latin American Literature,
clinical hypnosis, shamanism, and the neurophysiology
of imaginary states.
James is the head instructor of The Kaizen Center for
Strategic and Combative Arts in San Diego, CA, where
he teaches Judo, Japanese and Brazilian Jujutsu,
Russian Combat Sambo, Muay Thai, Krav MagaTM (Israeli
military self-defense), Hapkido and Combat Hapkido, as
well as Mamba-RyuTM and Ninjutsu. He will be assisted
in this seminar by his son Jimmy.
