Today in Savate class after prelims which
included roadwork, pushups, and crunches, Tim sparred with
Heath for 3 tough rounds. 13 year olds Cayleigh and
Kerry (new), and Shaw and Deb from the college took the
Savate class. The Trainer worked on stretching and
kicking for several rounds. Then Cayleigh and Kerry
sparred 5 rounds of Assault Savate as did Shaw and Deb.
Hamas of Woody's Workouts in Harrisburg came down with
one of his fighters and an exhausted Tim sparred
again for 3. Tim very much came out the winner this
time. In between spars the Trainer had Tim work the
handpads with him focusing on body shots and inside work
with Tim punching the pads and delivering uppercuts to
the Trainer's ribs who is so used to it he didn't
seem to mind. All students were reminded to come to
the seminar on Saturday. We need a good turnout.
A reminder. You can take Boxing and Kickboxing
classes in the privacy of your own home for just $1 per
week. You will be e-mailed pictures of descriptions of
the exercises demonstrated by the Trainer and members
of the club. E-mail us for details.
After roadwork and calisthenics Tim sparred 6
rounds with Moises. Then, Amber and Deb Boxed for 5.
Shaw, Jessica, Brooks, and Joe worked the bags along
with Cesar. The Trainer also worked with hand pads
with all. Deb and Brooks practiced slipping and
ducking under a rope stretched across the ring.
You are all cordially invited to come to the
Hanover Boxing Club in Hanover, Pennsylvania Saturday,
the 20th, at 1 pm until 5 pm for a seminar on Boxe
Francaise-Savate, old style, and la canne presented by one of the
country's foremost authorities on the French Martial Art.
We ask only for a donation to help defray Mr.
Taylor's expenses. All martial artists and anyone who is
interested are invited to attend. Go to the Founder's Home
Page and look up the club phone number to get
directions. We are 30 miles from Baltimore, Maryland.
After prelims, boxers Jason Gr and Tim did 30
minutes on the heavy bag and 20 minutes on the speed bag.
New boxer Shaw did a round timed bag workout at the
Trainer's instruction. Savateuse Deb sparred 5 rounds of
Assault Savate in the ring with the Trainer. She then
went to a bag workout with her Savate kicks at the
Trainer's instruction. Finally, Shaw and Deb squared off
for some defensive footwork drills.
After roadwork, Deb sparring Boxing with Jason Gr
for 3. Amber sparred kickboxing with Deb for 3. The
Trainer sparred Amber kickboxing for 3. Jason Gr and Tim
sparred boxing for 3. Amber and Tim sparred for 3.
Cayleigh worked on kicking and punching combinations on
bags. Steve and Shaw worked boxing on bags.
After roadwork and calisthenics, Tim and Gregg
sparred 3. Then Gregg and Fred I. sparred 3. Tim and Fred
I. sparred 3. Everyone got 6 in. New members, Alice,
Joe, and Jessica studied basic Savate along with
Cayleigh and the Trainer. Chasse' Frontale, chasse'
laterale, fouette', direct avant, and direct arriere were
worked. The emphasis was on the vast difference between
the way a kick is thrown in Savate and the way it is
thrown in karate. The aforementioned boxers worked the
bags after their sparring session. The Trainer
reviewed illegal punches and elbows with them after class
for their own protection.
Somebody said my profile made it clear that I was
a psychotic lunatic. I don't think that is a very
fair assessment of my personality. I am basically a
good person, just very misunderstood. And you have to
type in the words "Nerve Vortex" under clubs to get
there people.
Yours Truly,
Somebody you don't
want to meet in a dark alley.
After roadwork and calisthenics, 200 pushups for
competitors and 200 crunches, the Trainer sparred 3 rounds
with Deb, 3 rounds with Cayleigh, 4 rounds with Jason
Gr, 3 rounds with Amber, and 2 rounds with Tim.
That's a total of 15 rounds for the Trainer. Tim went on
and sparred 3 rounds with a sparring partner he
brought in called Joel. Then Moises and Cesar, fresh up
from Mexico sparred for 5 until Cesar's nose got a
little too bloody. While some sparred the others did bag
work.
After roadwork and calisthenics the class worked
on basic fighting skills specifically moving in,
striking, and moving out. The rest of the class was devoted
to sparring. Deb fought offense only against Gregg
for 3. Then Gregg and Tim went all out for 3.
Finally, Deb got in with Fred I. for 2. When Deb sparred
the heavier guys simply practiced defense; slipping,
ducking, and footwork. The Trainer sparred Kung Fu
instructor Heath, who could only stay in the ring with the
Trainer for 2 rounds before quitting. I think the eye
gouge had something to do with it on top of not being
able to stand up after the Trainer was through with
him. A new girl, Cayleigh, who is only 13, started
today. She has some good stuff and it is hoped she will
continue. Steve, who started Tuesday, was working out as
well.
In the future look for the happenings in class, who was there, and what they did
in the Calendar under that class. We'll leave the message thing open for people
to leave messages!
Tim Hatfield and Jason Grimm did their roadwork
in the rain. Then it was 200 pushups and 200
crunches. The Trainer sparred Deb Pfaff 5 rounds of Savate,
then she sparred Tim Hatfield and Jason Grimm 3 rounds
each of offensive boxing to their defense after they
had sparred each other for 3 rounds. The Trainer
sparred Kung Fu instructor, Heath Cross, for 3 rounds of
Boxing afterwards. Phil Plank sparred 3 rounds of
kickboxing with Jim Leete and then sparred 3 rounds of
Boxing with a heavyweight prospect from Harrisburg
brought down by Coach Hamas of Woody's Workouts. A new
student started Boxing today. In reality, the only Savate
taught was the session given by the Trainer to Deb
Pfaff. Good workout from all.
We started the class with stretching and
roadwork. Boxers ran 2 miles, then came back and did 200
pushups and 200 crunches. This was followed by jabs and
lead punching on the various bags in between sparring
sessions. The Trainer sparred in kickboxing for 3 rounds
with J.L. Immediately after, T.H. and J.Ga. boxed hard
for 3 rounds. Then it was J.Gr. and F.I.'s turn for
3. A.B. was warmed up for 2 by 11 year old B.F.
before she fought 205 lb. J.L. for 3 in boxing. Then,
the Trainer went at it with J.Ga. for 3 more rounds.
Finally, T.H. and J.Gr. sparred the last three boxing
rounds. This gave everyone except F.I. about 6 rounds of
hard sparring. Everyone worked very hard.
Hai. Tanoshikatta desu. Tada-no
gemu-datta-no.
I play with men's equipment (I'm too tall and
strong for women's) made by Mizuno, the finest on the
public market, I think. And so does my coach.
Ja mata
ne!
Ohayo gozaimasu, mizuno. You are Japanese aren't
you? No, wait. I don't think you are. I remember you
from my childhood. I had a horrible crush on you. I
used to sprinkle after shave on my letters I would
send to you. And little brother spent $1 on 100 pieces
of gum. Ah, so desu ka?
<Today's class began with the usual roadwork.
Then calisthenics. G.A. worked on low kicks and knee
strikes. Then he was shown ACS's method of setting up
kicks to the body with punches to the head. When T.H.
got back from his roadwork and calisthenics they both
worked on advanced ring and defensive technique for over
an hour. This included slipping and body hooks,
countering the slip, and countering the slip counter. Also
taught were the consequences of ducking the jab instead
of slipping and turning the opponent with the elbows
on the inside, setting up body shots.
The words and philosophy of my coach D.O. It's an
interesting parallel to the words/philosophy of HBC's chief
trainer, who's probably as tough as my own coach. Some
days, I don't perform up to D.O.'s expectation but he
doesn't let up. I'm a girl but not as sensitive as I used
to be. And D.O. is constantly telling me "you've got
the stuff". The best praise he has given recently is
motioning to his other trainees to come over where we're
working and saying "have you ever seen a girl do this?
Guys can't even do this!". It was worth all the hard
work. Maybe A.B. was just having an off day last
Saturday. She'll be back.
D.P. has nearly perfected her reverse roundhouse
kick. Many remarked at how smooth it appeared. She
fought 6 rounds in the ring today working out her
offense. 3 rounds against G.A. and 3 rounds against T.H..
G.A. and T.H. completed their tally of 6 rounds each
by completing their sessions with an all out match
against each other in Boxing only. J.S. worked two light
rounds with myself in the ring mainly for the enjoyment
of his father. He turned 10 Sunday.
Besides a little temper tantrum by our favorite
female prima donna we had a good class that boiled down
to basic and needful things. Like G.A.'s lead hook
and J.J.'s jab. I was really pleased with Boxer's
J.Gr. and T.H.'s endurance work. Even though we didn't
get much real Savate done we did get a lot
accomplished. P.P. was there but no Harrisburg fighters showed
up. Enough said.
The fight last Saturday at Joerg's American
Karate in Mechanicsburg was terrible. A.B. pitched a fit
because I asked her to let J.G. warm her up in the
cramped space we were in and then she got cheated in a 3
round decision. Neither her nor J.G. are listening to
their trainer. Maybe they feel they don't need one or
don't need this one. That was A.B.'s last fight for the
club. With a record of 6 wins and 8 losses I think
we've read enough of that book. The key word is
"listen, listen, listen!" Only 1 in 10 have ears. J.S.,
P.P., to name a couple. Hence, their success in the
ring. Enough said. I have no sympathy for overly
dramatic, crybaby, Rocky wanna be's who think they know too
much already until they get beat then blame everyone
else anyway.
