Warmup by doing a little walk laying head over the foot our weight is on, back
and forth.
I want to go over throwing the jab and moving side to side with the weight on
the back foot first. This will be the jab we use to set up the right cross.
Then, I want to go over throwing the jab with the weight on your front foot
moving side to side. This is the jab we use to set up the left hook for a 'hook
off the jab'.
Then, I want to go back to the jab with weight on the back foot to set up a 1-2
jab-cross. Then we'll do it jab-cross-left hook, all the while shifting our
weight appropriately.
Then, we'll go to the jab with the weight on the front foot and do the hook off
the jab, and then end up with the jab-left hook-uppercut combination.
It'll be important in all of this to make sure that you don't cross your feet
but step in the direction you're going with the foot that's on that side.
I want us to move up and down the line then shifting our weight and our heads
over each foot but never right down the middle back and forth forward and
backward for a round with the basic combinations we just worked on but add a
move off the line either pivotting to the left with a lead uppercut and stepping
to the right dragging the left hook and then a right cross.
For balance and control I'd like to see us shifting back and forth with our
weight and then I'll call out the punch to deliver in which case you want to
make sure you are on the proper foot with your head over it.
I want to finish up with just wraps on and practice throwing the jab with the
hand open until we actually turn it over for contact. Same with right cross,
extending your hand like you're reaching to grab something and making a tight
fist at the last second.
Keeping your fists clenched slows down the punch and doesn't allow you to focus
and take advantage of the turn of the right down to the right with the left
hand.
