I think you are both on the right track.
If you can obtain insurance for $240 that meets your needs, go for it! That
is as cheap as anything we have seen. For example, if you become a chapter of
DS/USA and are added to their group liability insurance policy, it costs $2000
+ per year for one sport (cycling). Our experience has been that seeking any
level of coverage as an individual adaptive sports program is very
expensive...group policies are the only way to go.
That being said, operating through the USHF is important for the coordination
and growth of handcycling around the country. I am sure once the USHF goes
through reorg, it will be possible to join as a chapter and also have your own
insurance. Insurance is just a service that USHF hopes to offer its member
chapters, in addition to many other benefits.
