Mike go to www.ushf.com for cycles links and try contacting bike-on.com, for
used. As far as test ride look at your rehab to see if they have a dealer
contact that might have one.

Greetings from Idaho,
Just joined the group.
I'm 50 years young, have always been very active despite having contacted Polio
at age two.
I do walk with the use of a leg brace and crutches.
My 21 yr. old son races for Montana State Univ. both Mtn. Bike and Road race.
To make a long story short Dave has got my interest in handcycling both to keep
active, enjoy the outdoors and eventually train a little and ride with him.
Does anybody have any contacts in the Northwest where I could possibly test
ride?
What is the best place to go looking for a quality used cycle?
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks in advance.
You can answer me direct.

This is a general FYI for everyone.

With the current explosion in electronic media(www, etc.), we have seen
a tremendous growth in media exposure for grassroots organizations,
disabled athletes, etc.

As fellow constituents in the effort to promote disabled sports, I'd
like to ask for your help in putting an end to increasing
inappropriate (and often illegal) usage of electronic material by
websites related to disabled sports:

Due to the relative "ease" of posting electronic photos and text on
the web, many websites have been "poaching" files from other sites on
the internet without permission, and without giving photo credit.
Indeed, copyright laws do exist...even for electronic files.

Obviously, there is no way to police this aggressively. However, if
you happen to notice a commercial website (i.e. a mail order company
with a "web store") who uses a photo that you suspect they may not
have obtained permission for -- or if they are not supplying photo
credit for -- do us a favor: Drop them a line and ask them to obtain
the proper authorization to use it (if they have not already done so).
Many times, all it takes is a phone call or an email and people will
authorize its use.

This message has been authored in response to numerous complaints we
received from athletes and/or journalists who feel "exploited" when
they see their photos or material widely used on the internet without
permission.

In most cases, the parties using the material inappropriately will
change it immediately and are unaware of the potentially harmful
nature of their actions.

We thank you in advance for your assistance in the protection of our
athlete and journalist members.

The 2001 calendar is still under construction. However, we hope to have it
finished by the 20th of this month. We will be finalizing the calendar at
the delegate assembly in Tampa next weekend.

Eileen,

I was aware of the existence of the "handcyclists" egroup in the past, but
not knowing the exact name, I got a bounce when I tried
handcyclist@egroups.com. A search for anything with the phrase
"handcycle"(including "handcyclists") on the egroups website came-up with
nothing. Thus, we concluded that it must be defunct. Good to know that it's
not defunct.

Not sure what steps to take from here......perhaps there is an easy way to
combine the two (?).

Also, it seems strange that the egroups.com website does not list the
handcyclists egroup. How do you join it ?

Scott,

I definitely agree that I should take it apart. You may have more
experience than I do at this. If I got it down to 2 boxes/cases of some
type. Would I be able to check it in with my other piece of luggage?
Which would give me 1 suitcase and 2 for the bike. Plus a carry-on, so
I would go over by one piece which is not a big deal. Would that be a
good way to do it? Let me know about your experiences. Thanks in
Advance.

Dear Steve,

I'm getting a Freedom Ryder Superbike XTR. I should be getting it
soon. I guess what i'm looking for is a case where I do have to take
apart the bike. Just not in a ton of pieces. When I get it, i'll be
able to figure out how small I can break it down and still get it back
together. What kind of case do you have? Thanks in Advance

Ian,

I'm already planning on having to take it apart. I have seen one
case. It was a CrateWorks case, there was also a review on
handcycling.com. If my memory serves me right. I want to say it was
about $140-150 for that one. I just didn't know how good it was. I'll
take a look at a the Ironcase. Thanks in Advance.

Which handcycle do you have? I have a great case that will fit some of the
bikes. It will ship UPS or take on the plane with you. Cost is $295.00 plus
shipping (usually about $15 to $30 depending on where you are). Let me know

Kevin,

Scott makes a good point: You'll want to break it down as small as
possible. Depending on the type of bike you have, there are some
boxes you can buy that are great for air travel:

   - The "Ironcase" -- around $200. It's a hard case and packs
everything nice & neat. You can even fit your wheels in it...but you
might need an a.b. to load it in/out of the car.
   - Sportaid also makes a nice custom case, but it's pricey (around
$400).

When all else fails, you can get good 'ol cardboard from your local
bike shop. They sometimes even have special wheelboxes. You'll get
out the door for less than $5....it's a good way to go if you can't
afford the hard cases.

Regardless, never pack it too big. I traveled with a guy once who had
his handcycle in a refrigerator box --- he didn't break it down at
all...what a nightmare!

Good luck....

Yea, have group rides. Check with area cycling clubs or create your own
like we copied from our bike-on group who had a muffin ride each weak. You
get the group together, ride, and have muffins or something to eat after!

Kevin,
I think if you can take apart as much as you can to fit it in as small a box
as possible, keeping it as light as possible in the long run will be easier
on you and the airline. If it's to big they will make you go inside to
check it in and there is a weight limit as well.
I take mine apart and put the frame in one box and the wheels in another and
the box can fit in the back seat of a car and the wheels in the trunk.
There are wheel bags available and if you plan on traveling allot you might
want a box made that is double thick, and some packing that will protect it.

Ideas for participation for the pure recreational rider?
Beyond having clinics or camps to coincide with races; any
suggestions to attract handcyclists who do not wish to compete head
to head in their appropriate category?
It seems, to me, that this is primarily the case with Criteriums vs.
Time Trial or Road Race.

Hi folks,

I subscribed you all to the handcycling egroup today because I wanted to get something rolling. Sorry to bombard your email.

Anyway, right now, you are all subscribed to receive individual emails.

However, I suggest you go to www.egroups.com and create a user account for yourself. This way, you can manage your own egroups account quickly and easily. You can choose to receive individual emails or to not receive any emails at all and just log on via the web and read/post messages.

Also, the Egroups site has all sorts of cool stuff....including contact lists, etc...including polls. You can create polls yourself if you want, and I in fact have already created one (and it's a doozy!!!).

Anyway, dig it! I know it takes time to set-up your account, etc....but I think we can really propogate the word about the sport very quickly if we all participate and get the community to grow!

Ian

Enter your vote today! Check out the new poll for the handcycling
group:

Over the last few years, handcycling
has clearly carved a niche for itself
in cycling events, and it seems it is
there to stay. However, there are still
some handcycles popping-up in running
events.

Do you think handcycling has a place in
running events (i.e. marathons, 10ks,
etc.)

o No, not at all. I think handcycles should be in cycling events only.
o Yes, but only if invited by the promoter and run separately from the wc
division.
o Yes, but not at the expense of the wc division. Wheelchairs should remain in
the spotlight at foot races.
o Yes, I don't care about the wheelchairs....let's replace them with
handcycle.....but not if it involves a lawsuit.
o Yes, and lets drive out the wheelchairs AND sue the promoters for inclusion.

not collected via email. To vote, you must go to the eGroups
web site listed above.

Thanks!
