I agree with you Joel. I wish I had the funds to be
able to participate in all the events and donate some
to the USHF but unfortunately, I don't at this time.
Like you said, it is very hard to get sponsors,
monetarily or equipment. One thing I do know is that
if it wasn't for the sport of handcycling, I would of
certainly not been involved in wheelchair sports.
Thanks to the generosity of Wheel Aggressive (Fred
Hecht), he got me involved in the racing scene
initially and got me on the right track to getting
started in the sport. I'm very grateful for that!
This is just an idea.......To get more sponsorship in
the organization? What about contacting some of the
bike parts manufacturers......such as Shimano, Zipp,
some of the apparel places, etc......see if they want
to get involved since the sport is definitely growing.
The sport has to be growing because I have noticed
alot more interest in the last couple of
months......I've been bombarded with e-mails since I
put up my site
www.geocities.com/warrenstrick/geauxhandcycling.html
although, I'm not able to offer nothing but advice, I
think that is a start and I'm trying to let as many
people as possible know about the sport. I know my
local bike shop has asked me to participate in some of
their club rides so I can be visible and others in
chairs or with lower limb limitations know there is a
cycling alternative out there...........I dont know
what the answer is but we definitely need DOLLARS! As
we speak I'm trying to scrape up enough to come to the
Denver Omnium and Altitude Training
Camp.......hopefully, something will come up!
Yours in Sport,
Warren A. Strickland, Jr.
