Hi,
You lucky DOG! You live in one of the greatest areas to handcycle in the USA.
I lived there for 25 years and served on a number of bicycle trail task forces
for the city and county of Sacramento. I also was in the bicycle business for
17 years there (Bike America). I am now an adaptive rider, skier - survivor.
Never Give Up Never Surrender!
I would suggest you find some handbikers in the Sacto area. You might start
by calling the nearest VA Clinic or Hospital as well as local Physical
Therapists. They will not give you names because of Hepa laws, but you could
request them to give your name and number to riders in their care and they can
call you.
Be specific with your request; to look at and possibly try their bike and get
their feedback about their handbike.
New styles and developments in handcycle design are appearing everyday. The
great thing about trying a couple different styles you may like the pivot steer,
or the lean and steer. Depending on your level of function or disease one may
work better than the other for your needs.
There are advantages to buying a used handbike: If you don't like it, you
haven't bought the whole farm. If you find you do like it but want a newer
version of that handbike you will probably be able to sell the used bike for
almost what you bought it for or more?
There are also weight limitations on some handcycles so choose wisely.
KUDO'S and good luck. Handcycling is a great sport and a springboard to other
adaptive sports.
If you would like to talk with me call. I do not sell handcycles but do
adaptive work for those who own adaptive sport equipment. I have worked on most
brands and styles. I have a health care background and I may be able to help you
through the minefields. It is best to buy what meets your needs and not the
sellers of the handcycle.
Freezing in Colorado and loving it!
