Judy,
Thanks so much for your report. It's a wonderful story. Guga is
just the way I imagine him to be. Yes his grin does light up the
room.... I can understand how your sister can't stand that you
got the chats and hugs and didn't know who he is :) JEALOUS!!!
I have never had the pleasure of meeting him in person.
I am glad that you got to meet him and really appreciate that you
came to this board and post this message. Best luck to yours and
Guga's recovery.
Yes, I would very much love to see him on TV again. I have not
seen him for soooo long :(

PA and actually met Guga when he was here recouperating from his hip
surgery. I go to the UPMC Sports Medicine complex twice a week for
my own physical situation. It was there that I chatted with the
tall, good looking guy who I later found out was quite the tennis
player! No, I didn't have a clue he was so big in the sport. I
chatted with him while we peddled side by side on stationery bikes.
I had a hard time understanding him at first but did get it that he
was here getting over surgery and that he was from Brazil. I asked
how he ended up here and he said his doctor at home knew of the fine
doctors here. I asked what he did and he said he likes to play
a 'little tennis'. For some stupid reason, when I was ready to
leave, I told him my first name and asked his. He said Gustavo and
he got off of his bike and gave me a hug. That's not totally unusual
in the setting as I go there as part of a class of Multiple Sclerosis
> patients. We have gotten to know each other and are very
friendly. I called my sister who is a tennis player herself and I
thought she followed the sport but had never really found out how
much. When I told her about the young man named Gustavo, described
him, and what he had just gone thru, she let out a scream although
she was at work. It seems he is her favorite and she's actually
travelled to tournaments to catch a live glimpse of Guga! She just
couldn't stand it that I didn't even know who he was and I had the
chance to spend a good 15 minutes or so just chatting casually with
him. What really got her was the hug! Over the weeks that he was in
physical therapy, I got to chat with him more. What a kind, caring
gentleman I got to know. He got friendly with my whole class and was
treated to home made fudge by one gal. He was a bit of a tease as
he'd see us doing some class exercises and make funny faces to
distract us. All in good fun. The last day he spent in Pittsburgh,
he did
> interrupt our class and he went to each of us (there were 8 there
that day) and gave us hugs and wished us all the best. My sister
wanted a picture and an autograph. I didn't. I was a whole lot
happier having those chats with Guga and the frequent hugs. He's so
tall! One day he was resting on a long bench--he was on his side
with his head propped up on on arm/elbow. I saw him alone, went
over, sat on the edge of the bench and chatted with him about the
birth of a niece, I think. The thing I remember most about him is
also what I noticed the very first time we talked--his grin. It's so
bright and sincere it lights up a room. After I let him know that I
found out who he was, he just grinned. He asked if I ever heard of
the French Open and I said yes, but didn't know much about it. He
seemed to take great delight in telling me he had played in it. I
was so impressed and he never told me how good he did in it. I found
that out later! There are a lot of people in a position like he is in
> who would let fame go to their heads. He didn't. He seemed to
laid back and certainly didn't think he was anyone important. In my
eyes--he's a total class act! I am happy to have a place to share
this wonderful experience with people who obviously would know what
I was talking about and would appreciate it. Needless to say, my
whole class is cheering Guga on and following his progress. I can't
wait until we can actually see him play on TV. Hold the good thought
for him that he comes back stronger than before. If the good
professionals here in Pittsburgh had anything to do with it, I'm
sure he will do just fine. My best to all! Judy
