I think many of them view anyone who ever received government aid in any form as
some sort of societal weakling or leech. Some even object to funding education
at any level.
Increasingly I find many Conservatives and Republicans who have a sense of
community or civic duty that doesn't extend past their mail boxes.
Ironically, laissez faire to them means build government funded roads, water,
sewage out to their property, have police and fire at ready at the instant and
then leave them alone so they can whine about government spending and
regulation.
Too many share the view of Grover Norquist when he said "government should be
shrunk to the size where it can be drowned in the bathtub". Well, how is that so
many people paradoxically vote for politicans who share that view and still
expect them to run government well or even take it seriously.
We saw what happened when Katrina hit. Government drowned.
