I think the far more likely course of action is a purely executive response.
Tightening of import restrictions to prevent cheaper import ammo like Fiochi,
Sellier & Belloit, Wolf, Silver Bear and restrict what types of firearms can be
imported. This can all be done (largely) without legislation by the various
executive positions and taps into the pre-existing choke point in expanding the
gun culture...being a huge surge in interest in gun ownership but a
corresponding inability to get affordable ammo and affordable semi-automatic
rifles. I have heard second hand claims that ammo availability and cost has
decreased range turn-out and match turn-out, especially in Production and Stock
Pistol classes that are the entry level of competitions. Another example of
this is the brief policy that came out where DoD was going to have to
shred/destroy once fired brass instead of selling it to remanufacturers and
brass companies. That quietly and quickly vanished when it was obvious folks
were getting bent out of shape about it.
Later we may see attempts at tightening of restrictions that will require
legislation. As the fastest growing sub-section of gun ownership, restricting
semi-autos is probably a poor idea...but congress and Holder may try it.
As long as the gun being taken away is a type you don't own...you can sacrifice
it on the alter of public good. Its a whole different matter when they are
telling you that YOU are the threat to public safety. Because ultimately it
isnt the gun that is the problem. Its YOU having the gun. You cant be trusted
not to shoot someone, or to store it properly or not to sell it to a criminal.
But as I said, import restrictions, administrative regulations making it harder
to be an FFL, deliberate fuck-fuck games in getting imported items out of their
port of arrival.
