RE: [guntotingliberals] Hello All
I have considered myself liberal for a longtime and especially as of late have
found myself more libertarian (as slippery a term as liberal) than anything.
As to why there are so few captial L Liberals of the modern American
defintion....there are some fundamental conflicts that will always keep gun
toting liberals a small group.
I dont agree with the assertion that the government needs to intercede because
of selfish tendancies of certain rich and powerful individuals in the private
sector. The government isnt a help, its as much part of the problem as well.
The huge amount of money and power in the hands of teh government gurrantees
that the corruption will be in the government as well. As long as the money is
there the corruption will be there. Barak, McCain, the Repblican revolution of
94, everyone tells you that they will end the corruption. Let me tell you, we
are not just waiting for the magical congressional election where the "Good
ones" get elected and the coruption and pork barrell will stop. It will only
stop when the money is taken out of it. The money is taken out be reducing the
size and scope of the government. We will doubtlessly argue on which parts, but
most will agree that the government is way too big. Only when we get a handle
on and except that there are many things the government shouldnt be involved in
will we see the end to milions of dollars given to the founding of the National
Pork Rhind Museum in Nebraska and such.
I have worked for the government for almost eight years and while it tries to
fix things and do good. It is only truly skilled at growing and making itself
more powerful. It has a talent for it.
Ultimately both sides have taken the wrong approach with the government and used
as a way to fix all their problems. Take marriage rights. Any attempt by
anyone to make a federal law that applies across all 50 states on marriage is
wrong. Its a states rights issue. In my opinion marriage should not exist as a
government institution of any sort. Anyone should be able to marry anyone else
if they can find a religious officiary to do it. But it should have no legal
status recognized by the government. If you want survivors benefits and all
that stuff, it should all go through civil courts and contract law. Any attempt
by the federal government to define marriage is wrong. States issue the
liscenses (also wrong) so who are the feds to tell them what they can and can't
do?
