I’m electronically challenged but as I understand it, when I reply to you, my
reply goes to other people who are listed on guntotingliberals. I stumbled on
this group when trying to find people who, like myself, want to encourage
government protection of the God-given right to keep and bear arms but who also
want to encourage freedom from the use of government to impose religious
beliefs, religious practices or religious prohibitions on the unconvinced. I
guess guntotingliberals comes as close to describing that perspective as any one
“word” I know.
I’m 64. About five years ago, as I was entering my second childhood, I decided
to look into buying something I had never had in my youth—airguns. I looked at
guns at a few stores before asking the clerk behind the counter at one store to
let me take a closer look at a particular model. After looking at it and asking
a few questions, I pointed at another gun on the rack and asked, “Is that also a
BB gun?”
“No. That’s an air rifle.”
Up until that moment I had always assumed that a BB gun was an air rifle and
vice versa.
Well, I bought a gun and started shooting it. I was immediately hooked.
Next I started trying to find out how accurately other people shoot.
To this day, the scores of formal airgun matches mean nothing to me. And I
don’t like crowds. My wife likes crowds even less than I do. So I decided that
one of the things that would encourage other people to shoot would be to devise
a system such that anyone in the English-speaking world could “compete” by long
distance and understand the scoring system. I asked our son to devise a
computer-generated target with a ten-ring one inch in diameter, a nine-ring two
inches in diameter and so on. I count each shot according to the side of the
line on which most of the hole is, except that if the hole has the line running
so nearly through its center that I can’t tell on which side of the line most of
the hole is, then I count the lower score plus a half point.
The NRA scoring system, as I understand it, gives an advantage to someone
shooting a larger caliber weapon. Which makes sense, I guess, since if you go
hunting, the larger caliber ammunition has an advantage, at least in theory.
But with my system, the larger caliber projectiles don’t have an advantage.
Which means, among other things, that you can “compete” with whatever kind or
kinds of guns you have and you don’t even need to tell me what kind you have.
Any kind, airgun or firearm, can be used at each “stage” of the competition.
For most of my friends and for me, shooting six shots offhand from 25 feet has
resulted in scores in the fifties. Occasionally, one of us gets a 57. One
lady, who had never shot anything before in her life and was being coached by
her husband, had a score in the single digits.
Even when I agree with the goals of political parties, I seldom agree with their
methods of achieving those goals. If I can’t offer something along the lines of
actual problem-solving ideas, arguing political ideologies seems pointless to
me. So welcome (even though I didn’t have anything with setting up
guntotingliberals). Maybe we can at least enjoy “competing” at an informal
level.

Hi Gabriel,

I'm still here, how are you?

Howdi; It has been a while since I posted, well over a year. To be honest I think that my political thinking has solidified a bit since then and I find myself...
