We are not neccessarily restricted by having to be on campus - though this
is an easy option for equipment etc.. Ultimately the location should suit
the intending instructors to help ensure success

Dear members,
In recent months the club has been inundated with enquires for kids
classes. Its something that we've not really had to think about until now.
If you have a passion for working with children then this is perhaps a good
opportunity for you.
We will discuss this at the next executive meeting so please let your
instructor know if you are interested or come along yourself - Tuesday 5pm
March 2nd at Southbank dojo.
Importantly you need not be a shodan to be involved though its probably
best to have one as the lead childrens instructor. Michael Williams sensei
has an extensive aiki-kids syllabus that has been very successful that we
will use as a model.

This months seniors class we'll be reviewing some material taught at a
seminar by Joe Thambu sensei. Thambu sensei is a highly respected Yoshinkan
Aikido teacher both within the Martial arts community as well as within the
security industry. Rob and I attended his 'restraint and removal' seminar
last year. It was a fascinating introduction into how many of our
techniques (notably ikkyo and sankyo) can be subtly varied for security
applications.

Dear all,
Firstly let me apolagise on Sensei Steve's behalf for his absense this
morning due to acute illness. Secondly the following changes to the
morning classes at the Nathan Dojo will now apply.
Wed. morning will start at 6:30am & run to 8:00am. This class will be
taken by Sensei Steve Dows (4th Dan) & will focus on general Aikido
technques in detail & Ki principles.
Fri. morning will start at 6:30am & run to 8:30am. This class will be
taken by myself (Simon Russell, 2nd Dan) & will focus on Yuishinkai
Syllabus & Taninzugake (Randori) for gradings & freestyle Aikido.
The acception to this is that I will be on annual leave with my family for
a month starting from Sat 21/2. During this time the Friday class will be
suspended until further notice unless there are any Yuishikai accredited
instructors out there that would like to take the class. If so please let
me know.
Hope to see you on the mat
Simon Russell
Dear all Griffith Aiki Diehards,
As of next Wednesday 4/2/04 the start time for the morning classes (Wed. &
Fri.) at the Nathan Dojo will change from 7am to 6:30am & run until
8-8:30am.
Hope to see you there
Simon Russell
Although weapons training at Nathan campus has ceased formally, a number of
dedicated students continue to hire the dojo and practice anyway on
Tuesdays 12-1pm and you are welocme to attend. As such this is not an
aikido club activity and is done at participants own risk. Where possible
an instructor will attend to lead the training as a regular class.
Secondly a member has requested the Will Reed book on KI, unfortunately
this was borrowed from the library without being signed out. If you have
borrowed this book please return it ASAP

This coming Saturday (17/1/04, 5-7pm) is the next Senior's evening class
at the nathan Dojo. The guest instructor will be Geoff Sweeting whom
practices & teaches the Chinese internal art Ba Gua Zhan. Geoff regularly
visits China learning from & living with the art's most senior instructor
& is one of only two people in Australia that has been given formal
permission to teach this art.
Ba Gua Zhang is one of three main martial arts styles from China that are
commonly referred to as ‚Internal Arts‚ (Xing Yi Quan, Ba Gua Zhang and
Tai Ji Quan). It is of special interest to Aikido practitioners as it has
been said that O'Sensei learned, & borrowed from, this art while on route
to Mongolia before he founded Aikido. It has very similar techniques to
Aikido but with devastating results that are designed to kill.
Ba gua zhang employs guerilla warfare- type tactics (movement tactics),
and the practice of circle walking helps engender the principle of
continuous movement. Due to it's positioning, circle walking forces the
opponent to be contained in the center while the practitioner remains on
the outside flank, facing the inside center, never offering a frontal
battle.
To learn more & have a play, please come along.
Simon

a spirited uke in yudansha gradings.
I look forward to seeing you there. Afterwards we may visit Southbank
for some refreshment and aiki-chit-chat.
best wishes,
Danny
Hi Guys,

Dear Members,
Following a recent executive committee meeting also attended by
instructors and senior club members a number of important decisions for
the coming year (effective January '04) were made.
HOLIDAY PERIOD TRAINING
All Griffith Aikido dojos will be closed from one week prior to Christmas
and Reopen one week after New Year.
Thursday Dec 18th - Thursday 8th Jan Inclusive.
TRAINING TIMES FOR 2004
Nathan
Wednesday 7:00am-9:00am
Friday 7:00am-9:00am
+3rd Saturday of the month, 3rd Kyu and up,
FEES
As a club annual an Annual Membership fee of $20 is (payable based on the
financial year). All members are required to pay $10 (half yearly rate)
in Jan 2004 and will receive a membership card.
Monthly tuition is $60($40 concession)
8 lesson prepay is $60($40 concession)
casual fee is $10($8 concession)
As a club our primary focus is for our regular members and hence it was
decided that the fee structure should reward regular training rather than
the occasional class.
ADMINISTRATION
This coming year the club will appoint a part time staff member to help
club administration, we hope this will ease the burden on our instructors
and also provide a greater level of service to members and further
enhance their practice of aikido.
INSTRUCTORS
Sadly John Ward Sensei is leaving us to take up a position in Adelaide
(and start another dojo). John has been instrumental in shaping the club
as we know it today and has provided instruction of the highest quality
for which he will be missed. The committee has recommended that Rod
Nixon-Smith be appointed as a new instructor to help fill the big shoes
left behind.
EXECUTIVE MEETINGS
The club executive meets on the first Tuesday of each month, all members
are welcome to submit to an instructor agenda items for consideration.
All instructors are also invited to attend.
This year has been an exciting year for the club with the establishment
of dojos at southbank and logan campus. All dojos now have a healthy core
of members and we look forward to the new year. Additionally its been an
exciting year for aikido yuishinkai with an evolving syllabus and
excellent teaching for Michael Williams Sensei and Master Koretoshi
Maruyama.
After checking my diary i noticed that its over three years ago that John
and I began practicing Jo on the oval at lunchtimes adn its fantastic to
see how it has evolved from there. Many thanks to all the instructors,
dedicated seniors and new members for their support. Whilst the road has
been somewhat rocky at times its always a joy to train on the mat with
you all.
I do hope you can all attend the seminar this weekend at the Nathan
Campus (Sunday 10a-4p) and look forward to seeing you there
kind regards,
danny
