Michael Williams Sensei will be holding a one day seminar in Brisbane on Sunday 7th December at the Nathan Dojo. Williams sensei will fine tune the newly introduced weapons waza, taiso and techniques. We may even have time for some katsugenundo. But you can be assured of a scintillating, inspirational, challenging and erudite 5 hours of Aikido. And importantly this represents an opportunity for tutelage from the World Chief Instructor (ninth Dan) of Aikido Yuishinkai. I'll repost this notice in November, as a form of gentle assistance to those of you with withering memory faculties.
Location: Griffith University, Nathan Campus the MP room located at the recreation centre.
When: Sunday the 7th December, session one: 10am. -12.30 pm. Session two: 1.30p.m -4.00pm.
Cost: $20 per class, $10 for students.
Cheers

Dear Members,
Sadly we have suffered the loss of a significant amount of
equipment at the Nathan dojo recently and have arranged for more
secure storage of our equipment. I'd like to ask that you all be vigilant
at all dojos about the storage of equipment after class as all of these
spaces are shared with other groups.
Unfortunately this has added some strain to our limited finances, and so
it's a timely reminder that without members training fees we cannot
continue to operate at low cost. Our club currently offers some of the
most inexpensive mat fees for aikido training that you will find
anywhere. This is mainly because we are a non-profit organization of the
university. As a club run by members for members, serial non-payers
insult not only the instructors who work very hard to provide a high
standard of instruction in a voluntary capacity, but also to all club
members who must carry the financial load. Of course please speak with
your instructor/executive committee member in cases of exceptional
financial hardship.
Our instructors and members of the executive committee work very hard to
keep your aikido club running and provide the most up to date teaching
they can. Your support both financially and learning together through
regular practice is appreciated.
Finally congratulations to our beginners course students on excellent
grading this morning at the Nathan dojo, I hope that many of you will
continue to advance in your training.
Best wishes,
dan

After consultation with folks training at the Southbank Dojo, training has been cancelled for this Sunday morning 14th of September. Maruyama Sensei is concluding the annual seminar series at the Goshinkan Dojo this Saturday with a Yuki and Katsugen undo session. Many of the Dojo members will be attending the Yuki sessions and therefore not training at Southbank on Sunday. Hope this doesn't cause too much inconvenience. Cheers

Hi All,
A Seminar report on the Master Koretoshi Maruyama 5 day seminar held at
Goshinkan, Byron Bay, Australia Sept 5-9 Sept 2003
What a fantastic, energetic seminar this year - fortunately spring came
late to Byron Bay which kept the temperatures favorable for vigorous
training (though challenging for Gi washing/drying)
This year Sensei Maruyama focused on three ideas (the Seichusen, Moon
shadow foot and Lizard legs) these were repeatedly emphasized and
experienced through aikido technique and weapons training. These ideas are
spoken at length in the new yuishinkai student guidebook by Sensei Michael
Williams but became living (reality?) at the seminar. Whilst most of the
tehnique syllabus was covered during the five days, I'll not attempt to
convey this here(though perhaps others will attempt?).
The Seichusen
The centre line (encompassing the gei/seika, chu, and jo tandens) is
familiar to many aikkidoka, its relationship to uke's centre line, where to
cut for projections and having that forward feeling during leading were
emphasized during weapons suburi and aikido technique.
I think Maruyamas seichusen was tested only once...as a passenger in Sensei
Neil's (Cleveland dojo) Corvette Stingray between classes one day ;)
Moon Shadow foot
Is a method of breaking ma-ai without ukes knowledge, this is achieved by
sliding the front forward with no weight on it (as a transitionary
movement). I guess a lot of experienced aikidoka do this anyway but it's
nice to have it presented in formal detail. Maruyama sensei explained how
it is borrowed from the shinkage sword school(s) and spoke of its use in
some famous duels in history. The name itself comes from how your foot
moves forward like the reflection of the moon on a pond.
Lizard legs
Was presented as a way of stepping to make distance to shikaku (hidden
point behind uke) comfortable with out having to take big steps, awkward
shuffling or dramatic leaps. Sensei explained this has helped his aikido
become more effective with big westerners (in particular Peter from
Fuji-ryu in Tasmania) and how as our bodies age this is a way to continue
to do effective movements with less hip mobility.
Weapons training
Of particular interest to me were his insights into traditional sword
practice where he explained a little of the linage of our sword training
and more on the famous shinkage ryu schools. He spoke why we have different
stances to traditional sword practice - owing to the use of bokken and
not having to wear heavy armour and also about some of the 'fictions' of
swordsmanship in popular Japanese movies.
A day of the seminar was devoted to Jo and Bokken practice, where we
studied the relationship of the above 3 principles through kata and
kumitachi. We studied bokken-bokken kumitachi (much like taigi 29 for you
KS folks) and he really brought it alive as an intense interaction, we then
covered Jo-Bokken kumitachi and the bokken part to the first jo kata
(shooting star aka taigi 27 for KS). In fact I would go as far to say the
first session was my favorite class(es) ever.
A particular students comment sticks in my head "I thought weapons was an
interesting side to aikido but never really understood its importance in
helping me understand things before"
Seminar Dinner/wild party
Saturday night we were treated to local Byron dojo talent at the seminar
dinner with the 'Senseishins' band lead by Michael Williams Sensei and
numbering some professional musicians in the group. Quieter moments also
featured some acoustic guitar and vocals and a few excellent piano and
vocal standards.
The seminar was well thought out showing a logical progression of ideas for
each class and the classes as a whole. Its clear that Maruyama sensei has
evolved his ideas (different from his time with Ki Society), in general
there is greater martial emphasis and he embraces concepts from other aiki
styles. e.g. he referred to and explained aiki-age from the daito-ryu as
well as teaching little snippets of other aiki-things as well (thought i
spied some shinbudokai stuff as well).
In closing Maruyama emphasized his motto 'I am mind itself' and reiterated
the importance of posture and the seichusen as the most important thing for
aikido and daily life. More info can be found on Maruyama sensei can be
found on http://aikidoyuishinkai.com

Dear Members,
The club is running a number of introductory aikido and weapons courses
through Griffith university as well as RAW (real adventure women) 1/2 day
courses with the brisbane city council.
I'd like to encourage all members to help out with these courses as they :-
a) help with your understanding when you have to teach what you have learnt
b) financially these courses have enabled the club to remain viable
c) they add to our new student base keeping our club healthy and growing
(and kudos with the university)
For beginers courses running during regular class times, we will where
possible split the class so regular training to not to disrupted
Attached below are the courses details. NOTE the typo on our nathan aikido
course (starting on a friday?) - I hope this doesn't influence numbers too
much.

This course introduces the martial art of Aikido in a cooperative
atmosphere. The foundations of Aikido stem from both the samuarai martial
arts and meditation disciplines. Aikido promotes and teaches the concepts
of being in harmony with your opponents, rather than in conflict with them.
Aikido practice develops flexibility, coordination, concentration, improved
well-being and fitness. During the course you will learn traditional
Aikido, basic self defence, ukemi (defensive tumbling), Ki training,
breathing methods, relaxation, stretching exercises and dojo safety. On
completion of the course, students will be given the opportunity to be
tested at an internationally recognised level. Full attendance is strongly
encouraged but not mandatory. The Aikdio Weapons course is included as an
optional part of this course, at no additional cost. See

SEMINAR, 5-9th September Master Koretoshi Maruyama (student of O'Sensei)
A reminder that the seminar is fast approaching please contact Jutta
(dowdyjutta@...) if you want to stay in the house. Additionally
"For catering purposes, I need to get the approximate number of people who
will be attending the party on Saturday night. It will be held at the
Ewingsdale Hall, the same venue as last year. I'm sure it will be a great
night as the band has been practicing regularly for weeks now. The cost of
the party, which includes dinner is $15 per person. It is fine for
students to bring a partner. Can you please send a reply and let me know
if you are planning to attend the event on Saturday night. You can pay for
the party when they pay their seminar fee. I just need to know numbers at
this stage. Look forward to seeing everyone soon. Valerie "

The new Aikido Yuishinkai Student Handbook by Michael Williams Sensei is
now completed and ready to go to the printer. It is 150 page comprehensive
book containing important information for Aikido Yuishinkai members and
those interested in learning more about Aikido Yuishinkai. Included are
segments on the history of Aikido, Maruyama Sensei, dojo ettiquette,
illustrated drawings of the warm-ups, yuki, grading syllabus for adult and
children, etc. I'm sure your students will find it a beneficial addition
to their aikido library. This book is written for the world group and is
not specific to Australia. It has been approved by Maruyama Sensei as the
official handbook.
The club is placing an advance order of this important handbook, I urge
every member to consider purchasing a copy. Please tell your instructor or
email me if you would like a copy reserved for you (Instructors can you
please email me the details of members wanting books). The book will cost
$20. I will place an order at the end of the week for the club.

Hi all
It is that time again when well all have to put back in a little to the
club so we can continue training the way we like. In order for the club to
operate at a low cost we have to comply with certain rules & guide lines.
One of which is to conduct an Annual General Meeting, which requires all
Griffith Aikido members to attend. For most of the year the club
Executives are happy to do all the boring/unpaid admin work but this is
the only time that we really need you to be involved in the admin
side on the club & all you need to do is show up. It is not as boring as
you would think & it provide an opportunity to bring forward any ideas,
issues, problems or grievances with the way the club is run & to meet all
the other like-minded Aikido enthusiasts.
The agenda will include:-
-Confirmation of the Minutes of the previous AGM.
-President's report, & report from other club executives.
-Presentation of the financial statement of previous financial year (2001-
2002).
-Election of club executive positions.
-General business.
As a member, you are invited to submit your own items to be included in the
agenda. Remember this is your club & it is important for have your say in how
it is run.
Please come to the Southbank dojo at 7:00pm on Thursday 7th August. Food
& drinks will be provided.
Regards
Simon Russell

Hi All,
Rob, Charlie and I attended at knife defense seminar in Brisbane on the
weekend(15th June) run by Steffen Messerschmidt who is a Phillipino
martial artist from IKAEF- international kali eskrima and arnis
federation. Stefan is also a jujutsu and Jeet Kune do instructor with
lots of other experience. Stefan runs a natural medicine practice on the
southside. Stefan was a plain talking friendly instructor with extremely
fluid movement showing a hint of what lies beneath ;)
Stefan began the seminar with a few home truths about knife self
defence.
1/ the best knife fighter in the world will get cut no matter how
inexperienced his opponent is
2/ if you see a knife and you have a chance to get away then do so...do
not hesitate.
3/ If you have to hand over your wallet to avoid an attack ..do so, money
is replacable your life is not.
The knife techniques evolved from the philipines where this was the
prefered method of combat and hence fighting systems evolved in a
survival of the fittest manner, similar to the samurai arts of japan. The
key difference between the aikido knife techniques and philiphino is that
since little armour worn outside of feudal japan, attacks no longer need
to be committed armour piercing strikes but can be light, fast slashes
that gradually defeat the opponent throgh limb paralysis adn
bleeding.
In order to learn knife defense you need to learn to be a knife fighter
and so the seminar began with attacking drills prior to learning to
defend with a knife and finally then open hand knife defence and
disarming. All of the drills are done with a partner and flow continually
so that the attacker after awhile becomes defender and then becomes the
attacker again - 'the flow' is emphasised and the drills are a lot of
fun.
Aikido hanmi is very similar to the knife defence/fighting stance except
that the wrists face the attacker so as to present no major arteries or
tendons as targets.
Knife taking techniques emphase taking balance, using the attackers knife
against them to 'encourage' them to let go, and avoidance of handling the
knife yourself so as to leave no finger prints on the knife. Also during
knife taking you will get cut! Knife grips heaven(conventional) and earth
(icepick) were practiced systametically and a variety of practice
knives were available to practice with. Stefan favours blunt steel
practice knives (with handles) as it increases awareness of when you are
touching the blade and they get you use to the feel and visual impact of
real knives.
The disarms are built on taking the 'mouse' - the fleshy part of the palm
beneath the thumb (the 'tail') with your fingers and using the elbow down
to tegatana part of your other arm to move/break the thumb to effect the
disarm. The setup up for these disarms was similar (if not identical) to
gokyo, kotegaeshi and reverse sankyo.
Again at the seminar it was encouraging to see that the framework of aiki
was a good basis for learning about the knife. Whilst there are
difference in footwork and what hand goes where and at what time, its
easily adapted to and aikido principles of blending and flowing are
useful as well.
Stefan runs seminars often and teaches classes twice a week as well. I'll
upload some details to the files section when i get a chance.
Rob and I will review some of the knife work and disarms practiced this
Wednesday morning at Griffiths nathan dojo (
http://griffithaikido.com
) as well as in the forthcoming weeks.
regards,
dan
PS For all you aiki-bikers out there it was encouraging/sobering to see Stefan practing his art in the abscence of an elbow joint (from a biking incident) wearing an impressive looking brace.
