Taikai* - Aikiworkout - The role of Uke
Monday June 14th
Southbank dojo
Andrew Sunter Sensei from the Aikido Yuishinkai Sydney dojo will
facilitate an exploration of the role of uke. While much of our
aikido practice is dedicated to the study and performance of technique as
nage, half of our time is spent as uke.
Over two 2-hour sessions, Sunter Sensei will lead the group through a
structured series of exercises and techniques to develop a better understanding
of being uke and taking ukemi.
Uke plays a critical role in the learning process, with a responsibility to
attack correctly, flow correctly and take ukemi correctly. Good ukemi develops
excellent awareness, ki extension and flowing movement, at advanced levels it
allows kaeshiwaza (reversals) to be explored.
Programme:
8:30 Preparation (please be on time)
9:00 Session 1
11:30 Session 2
2:00 Debrief
Cost
$10/8 per session
Regular monthly fee covers first session only.
Taikai* - We have borrowed from Maruyama Sensei's concept that every river has
a name but they all flow into one "great ocean". Therefore, the taikai presents
an opportunity to take part in an "aiki workout", independent of style and
syllabus.
