As part of our ongoing relationship with Campus Life, we are running a ‘self defense day’ exclusively for Griffith Uni College Residents on Sunday 6th April (Sunday week) from 10am – 3pm at the dojo. There is college accommodation on both Nathan campus and Mt Gravatt campus and it is open to all residents. It will cost participants $20 a head which represents a huge student discount. However, we don’t know at this stage just how many will turn up on the day. Aran will be the lead instructor on the day and Steve M and I will be there as well. But I would like to have 2-3 other Griffith Aikido seniors along as well to help out. This will be great experience if you want to teach self defense or indeed Aikido in the future, but it is essential that you attended both parts of Catherine Schnell’s self defense course in February this year. I wonder if I’m pushing my luck to ask for a volunteer (any Griffith Aikido student interested) to help out on the front desk from 9.30am or so just in case there is a bit of a rush. Your kind assistance would be greatly appreciated. Anyone interested please email me at gary@....
Community ‘Sunday Self Defence’
Please keep it in mind that we are also commencing regular ‘Sunday Self Defence’ classes at the dojo soon. They will be held on the 1st Sunday of each month 10.30am – 12.00pm, starting Sunday 4th May. Classes will be open to the general public and this is an important part of our commitment to offer basic personal protection skills to the community at large. The expert training that we received from Catherine Scnell and Mike Allen in February, together with the new equipment that we purchased for our self defence classes was proudly sponsored by the Australian Government National Community Crime Prevention Program. Soon you will see advertisements in the local papers promoting Griffith Aikido ‘Sunday Self Defence’. The $45 self defence package will consist of 3 x 1.5 hour lessons run over 3 consecutive months. This program is aimed at people who want basic skills in self protection rather than an ongoing commitment to dojo-based Aikido training. Email fliers will also be distributed soon and, if willing, you can be part of our distribution network by forwarding the email to people you know or who you think may be interested.
2. Grading and Syllabus DVD Available
Hi everyone
Don’t forget that we have plenty of grading DVD’s available, and if you don’t have a copy, they are a tremendous resource. One of our instructors, Simon Russell, put it together a couple of years ago and it’s 100% current. If you have a look at anything similar in other arts and/or styles of aikido, they are incredibly expensive. Our 2 DVD set for $50 covers all gradings from 7th kyu to 3rd Dan, plus other information such as taiso, lineage and taninzugake techniques. You’ll be using it through all your gradings, so it won’t be a case of buying it, looking at it a couple of times, and not looking at it again. If you’re new to aikido, or expecting to grade in May and don’t have one, please consider. They’re great.
