4. Gary Weigh’s Report on David Dangerfield Seminar
For those of you who missed David Dangerfield’s seminar last Saturday, you missed something really special – a day of Shinto Muso Ryu Iaijutsu. There were about 20 on the mat, including Danny and Charlie, Chris, Graeme, Mark and myself from Nathan dojo, as well as Tony Neal and Jay from Capalaba dojo. It was a very enjoyable day starting at 10am and finishing at 5pm, punctuated by a wonderful lunchtime vegetarian curry and capped off with a few drinks after class. Not only are those Palmwoods folks wonderful welcoming hosts, they really know how to enjoy themselves.
David Sensei shared with us what is undoubtedly just a small part of the vast knowledge and skill he has acquired from his Japanese teacher, Nishioka Tsuneo Sensei. But five and a half hours of his ‘Iaijutsu’ instruction did so much to deepen my understanding of the inextricable relationship between the sword and Aikido. Iaijutsu is the art of drawing the sword and cutting an opponent in one motion. Aikido becomes involved when the opponent tries to stop the drawing of the sword. For the first 2 hours we practiced ‘Iaido’, drawing the sword, which involved tandoku (solo) practice of several basic techniques. Drawing the sword quickly, smoothly and powerfully from the sheath (saya) was an interesting chapter in itself. Then we went on to learn how to draw the sword while stepping forward and while stepping back. This was tricky because the mind and the front hip must stay forward, which is much easier said than done. Then we practiced drawing the sword almost vertically in a confined space (even more tricky) and then drawing while moving off the line as if an imaginary opponent was pushing our sword arm back to prevent the draw.
After lunch we practiced combining Aikido with the drawing of the sword. All techniques began from a cross hand hold on the sword arm, with the sword sheathed. The ‘elbow over’ techniques included Ikkyo, Nikkyo, Sankyo, Yonkyo and Hijishime. The ‘elbow under’ techniques included Shihonage, Sayu, Gokyo Hijiate and Kotegaeshi. The host students on the mat were a mix of Aikido and weapons students, some of whom were quite senior. All were very enthusiastic and very willing to pair up and patiently share their knowledge and skill with us.
When the next Friendship Seminar comes around and you once again have the opportunity to visit the Aikido Institute at Palmwoods, I encourage you to grab the opportunity with both hands. You don’t have to be very experienced in either Aikido or weapons to go and have a good time and learn heaps. David Dangerfield is a wonderful teacher and both he and his student group are extremely friendly and welcoming people.
