Adventures in Peru

Hey :)

Just to let you know Paul, Brendon and I are alive and well in Huaraz, Peru - a valley town in the Andes surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The town was unfortunately flattened in the 70s by an earthquake so the old colonial architecture is replaced by red brick, mud brick and white-washed buildings, but the view from every angle is amazing.

For those who don`t know, we`ve just recovered from a massive visa/lost bag debarkle and have spent most of the last month in Buenos Aires. (see details at http://gpbrasil.vox.com where Paul has written our very last blog post, detailing the fiasco). Couldnīt have asked for a better to be stranded - Buenos Aires is ultra-cool - great clothes (and design in general), European architecture, friendly people, cheap, safe (in most places), aikido dojos everywhere, subway, parks and museums. I could seriously live there and may well someday. Considering itīs the world capital for beef, the cityīs got a lot of vego restaurants (Paul was stoked!) and I didnīt manage to get a decent steak until our last night. Oh the sacrifices we make for love!

Flew from BA to Lima and was so surprised we got no hassle getting out of their I almost started looking around for officials to give me a hard time. Brendon was waiting for us at arrivals (nice surprise) & now we are three little Aussie travellers (and still getting the inevitable "ah.....kangarooo" from every local who asks us where we are from).

After 2 days of acclimatising, we couldnīt really make any more excuses for sitting on our lazy arses, sitting in luxurious cafeīs, taking in the view around town. The day before yesterday Paul and I trekked up a local mountain side to the cross (which we had seen from the cafe balcony). I couldnīt believe how hard it was to get up there but felt gratified once we made it. Today however, checking into our new hostel, I saw a sign on the door "We highly suggest you DONīT go up to "The Cross" as there have been many muggings and attacks in this location". We must have got lucky ,-)

Then yesterday, after a 2hr drive with this crazy cab driver who felt the urge to hold down his horn at everyone - including dogs, cars he was overtaking, old ladies crossing the street, we made the start of the trek to Lagoona 69 (4400m above sea level in the Cardilla Blanca range).  I was seriously dieing the whole way up. I couldnīt breathe, and I canīt just blame the altitude for that one - I have gotten seriously unfit! The accent felt like 4hrs of a Michael Waddington work-out.  However, the views...which I got plenty of look at as I was stopping every 10metres, were spectacular.

Paul got pretty bad altitude sickness and decided to stop at the first lagoon (Brendon had gone way ahead by this stage) and so I made the trek up the final steep mountain to Lagoona 69 alone...alone except for the cow that followed me all the way to the end of the next valley. Away from the young, fit trekkers, I wasnīt so shamed-out at how often I made stops.  You can see a video of me at the lagoon here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC6G7g9SEO0

Anyway, Iīve raved on for long enough.  Hope youīre doing great and please write - I always love news from home and OS - wherever you are.

Gabby xx

3.    Griffith Aikido Library item missing

Firstly, a big thank you has to go to all  generous, anonymous donors to the club library. However, there is one item missing from the library - "lone wolf and cub" DVD. If you have this item and you have forgotten to return it, could you please do so as soon as possible.
