Griffith Shukan

This is your Thursday emailout of Griffith Shukan (Thursday Notices) – 22.2.07 to club members and interested parties on Yahoo groups regarding club matters and upcoming events.  If you have something to include or a constructive comment to improve this newsletter, please let me know.

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the second edition of our Thursday Notices under its new name  -  Griffith Shukan.  Shukan simply means weekly, so therefore – ‘Griffith Weekly’, but with a funky Japanese word insteadJ.  It gives some real identity to our Thursday Notices newsletter, which has become a respectable and informative publication.  Hope you like the name.  Please continue to enjoy and contribute.

1.         Griffith University Orientation Week

A big thank you to those who helped make the Nathan and Logan O-Week market days a big success this week, by signing up new members to our club.  New members ensure our continued growth and vibrancy as a club, and we must remember what a privilege it is to welcome new people to aikido and introduce them to the benefits we already gain from this art.  There are still two opportunities to help your club out.

Griffith Uni Market Day for Week 1 is at Mt Gravatt Monday 26th February and Nathan again on Thursday 1st March.  If you can give us a couple of hours of your time for Week 1, it would be fantastic.

Please let me know today if you can help out.  I was hoping to make it a 2 hour shift (happy to have you there longer if you wish):

Week 1

Mt Gravatt:     Monday 26 February              -           10am to 2pm

Nathan:           Thursday 1 March                   -           10am to 2pm

If you can help out, please let me know via email or give me a call (see bottom of this page), and please indicate preferred times.  For beginners – this is an opportunity to recruit club members who you are senior too!!! JJ

2.         Friendship Seminar with David Dangerfield Sensei

I am pleased to announce a FREE friendship seminar with David Dangerfield Sensei is on at Palmwoods (Sunshine Coast – 6 minutes off the highway) on Saturday & Sunday the 17th and 18th of March.  Schedule is as follows:

Saturday          4-6pm              Introduction to Shinto Muso Ryu Jojutsu (with David Dangerfield Sensei)

7pm                 Dinner at a local Thai restaurant (booking essential)

Sunday            10am               SMR Jojutsu (continued)

12noon            lunch

1pm                 Ki development/coordination/aikido (Steve Dows Sensei)

3pm                 Questions/Discussions/Technique Workshop

                        3.30pm            Afternoon Tea and Drinks

Cost:                                        Free

Accommodation:                    Free (aikidoka may sleep at the dojo overnight)

Transport:                                Approach your instructors or senior students or raise it at the end of class if you’re interested but don’t have transport.  Someone will be going that you can catch a lift with.

This friendship seminar is an event which I have arranged with David Dangerfield Sensei to allow our respective club members to share and experience each other’s aikido.  It allows us to improve our aikido by looking at it through the eyes of others who also choose to do aikido, but are approaching it and experiencing it through a different style.  It is an opportunity to develop and explore your own aikido which I thoroughly recommend to you.

I will be visiting dojos this week to promote this seminar and answer any questions.

Flyers are available at each dojo.  For more information about the Palmwoods dojo, please visit:  www.aikidoinstitute.com.au/tai.htm

3.         Mat Fees

Fees are due at the beginning of each month.  Without them, the club simply can’t operate.  It’s great that the club is able to provide to its members the opportunity to train as much as possible for a very, very reasonable fee.  Everyone would appreciate the fact that mat fees are very cheap for all the training offered and that a club relies on its members and their financial contribution through mat fees, to continue to offer this great service to them.  Thank you to those club members who make an effort to pay their mat fees on time or very soon thereafter (first week of the month).

We study a martial art, and it is disrespectful and very poor etiquette to allow your fees to become overdue to the point someone has to chase you.  That usually falls to Jutta, who doesn’t actually like chasing fees, especially as they should simply be paid (or arrangements made to pay them at a later date) in the first week of the month.  If your February mat fees are outstanding, please pay them as soon as possible.

4.         “The Unfettered Mind: Writings of the Zen Master to the Sword Master” by Takuan Soho

The No-mind is the same as the Right-mind. It neither congeals nor fixes itself in one place. It is called No-mind when mind has neither discrimination nor thoughts, but wanders about the entire body and extends throughout the entire self.

The No-mind is placed nowhere, yet it is not like wood or stone. Where there is no stopping place, it is called No-mind. When it stops, there is something in the mind…

When this No-mind has been well developed, the mind does not stop with one thing. It is like water overflowing and exists within itself. It appears appropriately when facing a time of need.

The mind that becomes fixed and stops in one place does not function freely. Similarly, the wheels of a cart go around because they are not rigidly in one place. If they were to stick tight, they would not go around. The mind is also something that does not function if it becomes attached to a single situation.

Club Sponsorship

We have a sponsorship arrangement with Brisbane based residential home loan manager, Direct Credit Home Loans Australia.   As part of an ongoing relationship, Direct Credit Home loans has made an attractive home loan offer to our club members, their family & friends.   In addition, they have offered to pay us a spotter’s fee on each home loan referred through the club.    Just let one of the Executive know if you think you know someone who may be interested.
