Good Day,
A friend from Aethelmearc posted a well written piece on his thoughts for melee and weapons mixes on his Live Journal. It should be viewable by anyone.

I basically agreed and believe that Atlantia already does what he suggests.

I believe they are making up as they go i.e. lets see how many people show up then make an event.  Holiday Faire is very weather dependent.

Greetings unto the Northern Army.

First of an update on last weeks practice.
Despite the persistent rain we had no less than 13 fighters at any one time. We also had 2 observers.
Attending:
Sir Tash
Lord Volkhard
Lord Stiofan
Lord Willian The Shoprat
Lady Kat
Lord Todd
Two Gentles from Barony of Brighthills.
Neil
Conrad
Amanda
Erica
Rachel
Observing:
Gabriel
Andrew
Kevin
We have moved to an on night/off night schedule, with the first and third Fridays of the month focusing on unit combat, and the others on one-on-one fighting.
We started with a bear pit in the courtyard for the first 45 minutes with much commentary from the observers.
After this we moved into the open lot, and practiced mixed melee, ranging from 2-on-2 all the way up to 5-on-5.
Things wound down with Sir Tash and William giving one on one instruction to fighters, and general conversation about unit tactics.
This week we are going to re-cap all the unit commands we have garnered so far. For individuals wanting to see/participate in the Northern Army unit commands, this is a good time to do so.

Secondly, we will be starting youth fighting this week at The Haven. Looks like we will be starting with 3 fighters. If you have any children who want to learn the art, this looks to be the largest in the area.

No heavy/rapier/dance practice at Storvik on Monday, November 30.  The church is hosting a homeless shelter and needs exclusive access to the hall.

There *is* practice Thanksgiving week and the week following the shelter.

I have been working on getting together a set of numbers for Gulf Wars transportation. I have come up with a package to get 17 fighters with gear to the event for about $135 a person. These numbers are based on a 2,000 miles round trip with gas at 2.60 a gallon. I am putting gas millage at 12/gallon though I am told that is low.

a 15 passenger van- 799.99 a week comes with 1750 miles
extra milage fee- 55.00 (250 miles x .22/mile)
gas at 2.60/gallon 434.00

a 12ft. cargo van- 395.00 a week comes with 1,200 miles
extra milage fee- 176.00 (800 x .22/mile)
gas at 2.60/gallon 434.00
total 2293.98
(No tax due to 403B status)

$134.94 per person (15/van 1 + 2/van 2)

This would assume barracks style camping and minimal food/cooking equipment. (Gulf Wars has a buffet style food plan.)

What degree of interest do we have? If interested I would like you to respond in the Gulf Wars transport data base.

extra milage fee- 176.00 (800 x .22/mile)
gas at 2.60/gallon 434.00
total 2293.98
(No tax due to 403B status)

$134.94 per person (15/van 1 + 2/van 2)

This would assume barracks style camping and minimal food/cooking equipment. (Gulf Wars has a buffet style food plan.)

What degree of interest do we have? If interested I would like you to respond in the Gulf Wars transport data base.

I have been working on getting together a set of numbers for Gulf Wars
transportation. I have come up with a package to get 17 fighters with gear to
the event for about $135 a person. These numbers are based on a 2,000 miles
round trip with gas at 2.60 a gallon. I am putting gas millage at 12/gallon
though I am told that is low.

a 15 passenger van- 799.99 a week comes with 1750 miles
extra milage fee- 55.00 (250 miles x .22/mile)
gas at 2.60/gallon 434.00

a 12ft. cargo van- 395.00 a week comes with 1,200 miles

I would recommend that even if you don't plan on fighting in the Pas that this is a good thing to go to for the new fighters so that they can get a different look at Tourny's.

While it might be a little more later period then more of you are used to done right these types of events can be magical.

Next Saturday, on the 14th day of November, Master Kevin of Thornbury and
his puissant Defenders will stand against all challengers in honor of
Maestra Giuliana Salviati. The Barony of Ponte Alto welcomes all the
populace of Atlantia to see the feats of arms that will occur this day, to
enjoy the performances of Atlantia's finest bards, musicians, and
storytellers, to partake of a delicious feast, and revel in the pageantry
and beauty of the day.
As the autocrat, I am pleased to present the schedule for Tourney of the
Lily:
9:00 a.m. - Gate opens (Gate house)
10:30 a.m. -- Tourney of the Lily Procession begins (Heavy Weapons field)
11:00 a.m. - Rapier activities begin (Rapier field)
1:30 p.m. - Performer's Hour begins (Heavy Weapons field or Pavillion if
weather disagreeable)
3:30 p.m. - Court (Pavillion)
5:00 p.m. - Feast (Feast Hall)
Some notes regarding the event: The Tourney is a Pas d'Armes, with a high premium placed on pageantry and
pomp. Bring your spiffy armor and garb, have a herald ready to trumpet your
might (or "rent" one onsite.), bring an entourage to process in with you
(particularly kids..there will be a special focus on children in the
procession). Traditionally, a pas d'armes was supposed to be a
demonstration of showmanship as well as fighting prowess, and too much is
never enough. Bring your best, it's part of the fun!
Don't forget about the A&S Competition! There will be an Autocrat's Prize
for the best 15th Century Italian item in display around the Heavy Weapons
Field. Those who wish to enter may pick up a token to mark the item in
display around the list field. Any item may be entered - armor, banners,
glassware, garb, headgear, anything at all. Just mark it with the token and
it will be judged. Documentation is a plus but not necessary.
PERFORMERS! Be sure to sign up for the Performer's Hour! Do not miss this
opportunity to share your gift with us. Bards, musicians, storytellers ,
comedia troupes, performers of all kinds are all welcome! Lady Swannoc is
coordinating the schedule. Email her at derweasel@...
There is cabin space available, and feast space as well. Feast has been
scheduled early specifically to accommodate families with smaller children.
If you intend to camp onsite, please make sure you reserve in advance, as
cabin space is limited.
Troll will be open Friday night in the feast hall for those travelling and
camping onsite Friday night. For those camping, be aware that we request
that cabins be vacated no later than 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning, to ensure
that we can return the camp to the Park officials by their deadline. Please
assist us by respecting this deadline.
FOR PONTOONS LOOKING TO HELP OUT:
-- Caitlin is organizing waterbearers for both fields. If you would like to
help out, please email her at mentoni@...
-- Our gate keepers (aka trolls) could always use assistance. Email Celia
Rosedale at psallite703@... if you want to help out.
-- if you have a big voice and you're curious about what it's like to be a
field herald, then the head of our "rent-a-herald" program would like to
talk to you! Be a part of the fun on the list field! Email her at
herald@... if you would like to help.
-- We always need strong backs and willing hands to help with both set up
and break down. That means Friday afternoon after 3 p.m. and Sunday morning
starting promptly at 9 a.m. We have to have the camp back to rights and
ready to return to the rangers no later than 11:30 a.m. Many hands make
light work, and BTW, I like to feed my workers well. Email me at
scalucia@... if you can join us to help.
We look forward to seeing you next week! I know that there is a lot of
excitement leading up to this event, and there is a great possibility here
for Ponte Alto to really shine. Come be a part of it.
In Service,
Luce Antony Venus
Autocrat, Tourney of the Lily

First, we have acquired two 10ft field lights, so lighting is no longer an issue. Which is good with the sn setting at 5:30 and practice starting at 6 -grin-

We had an excellent practice that was attended by:

Sir Tash
Lord Steiophan
Lord Volkhard
Lady Kalara
Lady Kat
Lord William The Shoprat
Andrew
Neil
Amanda
Conrad
Ulf
Rachel
3 Gentals from Galacia, I am sorry, I can not remember your names or titles!
Observed by:
Bjorn

The House Hedgehog 7 man team formed up, moved about with different people practicing issuing commands to get the group from point a to b, or to achieve a goal.

We then drilled charge responses, and the Re...Ceive command.

We then drilled unit reactions to attacks from multiple directions. I will make a note here, that our drill is mostly movement, knowing WHEN do fall back, and where. Observation from people familiar with this formation, and how it works would be appreciated.

We then drilled protecting the man to your left, Staying alive from the enemy in front of you, while killing the enemy to your right.

There was a 5 min break at this point.

We then did 2 on 2, 3 on 3, 4 on 4 melee bearpit. Galacia as can be expected held the day. The second half of this bear pit, we focused on communication while in the scrum, using a buddy system and noticed that our kill rate shot up! We will be doing this more often and focusing more on this.

Sir Tash and Ulf did a mock authorization, and there was general discussion on tactics in one on one vs melee. Lord William did a 5 min bit on learning where to focus in melee (the screaming baby method of melee focus).

At this point practice was ended, and people starting doing one on one combat and slow work with vets.

Hail and well met.

First of all thank you, what a great day it was. The weather was perfect, the food was awesome and you fine gentles made the day.  We made an impact on the campus of Hagerstown Community College. The faculty was impressed and enjoyed what we did and they want to thank you as well. We recruited quite a few students as well. With 500+ students coming through today to watch us, I do believe they enjoyed themselves. I hope this can be a tradition in the future for us to do at least once a year. What else can I say but “thank you”.

Humbly yours,

Friends:

As I believe most of you are aware, I have spent the past year
striving to find gainful employ within our local economy.

True to my nature as perhaps one of the more epic (or perhaps tragic
or comic, depending on your perspective, of course) squire errants of
our Society, it is apparently not to be so -- since I seem to need to
move Kingdoms every three to four years whether I want to or not.

I have finally been offered (and just accepted) a job as the Vice
President of Strategic Marketing Intelligence working directly for the
President and the CEO of one of the top ten to fifteen largest
advertising agencies in the country -- which is unfortunately down in
the fiery depths of Trimaris (Fort Lauderdale, FL).

On the positive side, it is an absolutely fantastic opportunity in a
truly beautiful (though goddawful sunny and humid -- particularly for
us redheads) city where a bunch of my family lives -- with the added
benefit that I won't be homeless, unemployed and in abject poverty.
On the negative side, it's in Trimaris and not with all y'all here in
Ponte Alto and Atlantia.

I fervently and deeply wish that it were possible for me to stay and
continue to enjoy the tremendous comradeship and fantastic esprit that
we have developed together and to help continue to provide whatever
small leadership and training support my skills might enable so as to
help continue to move things forward... but sadly the fates have not
willed it so.

Working with and being a part of our Scholum, Unit, and Army has been
one of the most rewarding and fun experiences I could imagine, and I
thank you all for helping make it happen. All our accomplishments and
achievements are yours, and I am humbled and grateful to have been a
part of what you all have done together. It is my sincere wish and
hope that you will all continue this work to keep making it happen for
yourselves and for our great Kingdom.

I look forward to visiting and seeing you all often at events and on
the field -- and who knows.... I've come back to Atlantia, before!

Always in friendship and service,

Max Von Halstern

I’m sure we can scrounge up some Blackspears to take you on.

Find the Blackspear warlord, Finn O’Donovan, at the event—I’m sure he can help get us organized.  If you can’t find him, feel free to flag me down.

Due to the venu being rented out 30 min after the scheduled practice time, the fighting was light this week at The Haven.

In Attendance:

Sir Tash

Bejorn

Morgan

Lord Gerhard

Lady Kalara

Andrew

Neil

Conrad

Erica

Amanda

Conrad and Neil showed up an hour early to build new swords, make use of the armor repair shelf while Volkhard, Steiophan and Erica did slow work on rib guard/shield replacment. During the scheduled practice time Sir Tash did one on one work with fighters and every one did bear pit.

There is a request for his Majesty from the poalarms, to at some point come and do a follow up class on polearm use, as his students from the last class have been drilling his advance attack/retreat block drill around the yard for some time now.

On a seperate note, House Hedgehog wil be attending Crown Tourny with at least 8 fighters, and wanted to know if the there was intrest/space for some 7 man on 7 man unit practice at the event?

Thank you,

Volkhard Rovan and Steiophan MacMartin.
