I hope everyone is able to get out and enjoy riding in this great
weather! As for me, I have been riding nearly every day from 30 to 50
miles. Ole Putittakeit and me are going to hook up for the Marion
Popcorn Festival ride. If anyone else on here is going, let us know and
maybe we can get a group together. See ya.

I am signed up as well and would love to join you. Keep me posted on details :)

Anyone headed to the Tour de Donut September 6 in Arcanum?
Wildly popular ride where you ride a 30 mile course that is timed. Along the way
there are 2 rest stops where you can eat donuts. The donuts reduce your time by
5 minutes each.
registration ends at 400 rider limit or August 31.

I've done it numerous times. It's a great route and well supported,
plenty of food, mostly flat, but a good climb back out of the park at
the first food stop. The Madison Lake stop is nice. My only complaint
is that it is on Sunday, and the roast beef sammiches aren't available
until Monday (the actual Ox Roast). So I have to come back and ride it
again!

We have done the OX Roast ride for about 9 years. It is a great ride
with good food and support. We have registered for this year.

Ha all!I just got back for taking a 45 mile ride with two of my
childern to the bicycle museum in New Bermen Ohio. The day was
perfect. While I was there I found out that New Bremen days are the
15th though the 17th of August and they are having local ride upto 50
miles. The museum also has Lance Armstrong Bike on display for a
limited time. If you have not been there then you are missing out on a
great time. Admission is cheap $3 for adults and $1 for kids.
I may ride the GOBA in 2009 as a shakedown for a 650-mile Lake
Michigan circle tour in October. On that trip, I will be riding fully
loaded.
Does anyone ever ride GOBA with gear on board rather than using the
gear shuttle? Is this even allowed?

Greg,
I have seen several people riding GOBA self-contained. I talked to a
few and most said they were doing it to practice for a longer ride.

Yep, it is allowed and it is done by several people each year.
The Lake Michigan tour sounds great!

That's what I did last year. And I did all the optional mileage too. Found
I couldn't push as hard as I usually do on my commutes (about 1/3rd the
load) because my right knee started acting up. Also, I was wearing a Heart
Rate Monitor and early in the week I was having no trouble with going into
the anaerobic zone but by the end I was having trouble getting high into the
aerobic zone--classic over training.

Drunk? I hope not! ;-)
Loaded with gear? Yes. There's no rule against it, and I see a few
fully loaded tourers on GOBA every year. I always assume they are
preparing for a longer, unsupported trip.
Go for it, Greg! The Lake Michigan trip sounds like it will be a great
adventure.

I did it a few years ago for the same reason. To get even more
practice, I rode to and from GOBA This added another 300 miles to the
GOBA mileage, but saved a lot of gas. If you find you have overpacked,
you can bring or buy a small bag and throw it on the truck daily. No
problem!

Greg,
I know it's farther than 630 miles around Lake Michigan. Are you
taking the ferry across at Manitowac? Are you doing the ride yourself,
or part of a bigger tour group? It sounds really good. I rode self
supported around Lake Erie with one other person two years ago. We
took the ferry from Leamington to Sandusky rather than ride through the
Detroit and Toledo areas.
Sharon
The plan, very tentative at this point, is to start in Muskegon, MI
and take the ferry to Milwaukee, WI. Same as Ludington-Manitowac,
just farther south. Then up and over the U.P., Mackinac I, Traverse
City, Sleeping Bear Dunes, etc.
Ludington isn't out of the question as a start point though. Not much
to see between Ludington and Muskegon after doing the U.P. and
Sleeping Bear. Might just be pointless miles.
It won't be a tour group per se as I'm not big into agendas when on
vacation. The larger the group, the more structured the trip has to
be to meet everyone's expectations. I want the flexibility of hanging
out on the beach or visiting a bear ranch for a few hours w/o people
chomping at the bit to get another 40 miles in that day. Plus, I plan
to ultralight camp as much as possible. I'd like to minimize motel
stays as much as possible and camping isn't for everyone.
On the other hand, most of my backpacking buddies are not cycling
enthusiasts, so I can probably count them out. My family isn't keen
on me doing it solo, so my plan is to attend some area cycling club
meetings, do some rides, meet some new people, share ideas, and if the
planets align right and I click with the people I meet along the way,
then they are the group I guess.
Good move bypassing Toledo and Detroit. Yick!
Thanks for your reply.

I questioned my choice of words right after I posted that and wondered
if anyone would call me on it. :-)
Speaking of "drunk," I noticed alcohol is strictly forbidden on the
GOBA "because it's a family event." If that is the case, why is
smoking allowed?

As far as I know, alcohol is prohibited on the "camp" grounds because
they are schools, etc. But if you choose to go to bars, as I saw many
Goba folks do, that's your business.
My favorite (ha ha) smoker was the one who rode up one of those giant
hills in Coshocton and stopped to have a smoke at the top. Geez. Not
really how I relax.

Ah, school grounds. That makes sense.

Well, about this time of year we always start trying to guess where
GOBA will be next year. Any guesses? I have the last ten years plotted
on a map. It shows 4 areas that GOBA hasn't been in the last ten years.
Of course, the controversial northeast corner is one. The others are
east near Cambridge, south near Portsmouth, and northwest near
Defiance. I hope it is south or east in the hills. I really don't know
why I care where it is. I am always lost anyway.

Hey gang, If you are looking for a couple of good bike rides for the
near future, check out these. Ole Putittakeit and I are going to ride
the Ox Roast ride in West Jefferson on Sunday, August 31 and then the
Marion Popcorn Festival ride on Saturday, September 6. Both have web
sites.
Onyaleft
The Wright Wride Weekend is next week August 23 for historical tour and 24th
for road tour and we have a website too...
Kinda hilly but very nice.
