Hey M~

Have a wonderful GOBA this year - tell Blake I'm REALLY gonna miss chasing
him!!! Although my knee doesn't let me run much anymore....:-))) And I
forgot - did you say you/Blake and or Martin will be on XOBA? We're going
to give it our best shot - we've signed up and are training right now.

Peace and good riding!

Hi Lisa!

We will miss you next week. I hope you heal well and can be ready for
XOBA.

Neither Blake or Martin will be on XOBA. They are both working at
Geauga Lake this summer and wanted to earn money rather than take a
whole wee off to ride. Blake will be going on GOBA and Martin will be
working through that as well.

Just beware....someday Blake is going to show up on your doorstep, tag
you and run!

After much entering, updating and re-entering, I have a final set of
waypoints for GOBA 17 uploaded to the GOBAhams.org website and the
GOBAhams group at Yahoo. I make no guarantees as to accuracy as some
new waypoints were pulled from mapping software and there were several
re-routes around road closings, etc.

I will have my laptop and a jump drive with the waypoints on them if you
don't get the waypoints in time. Bring your cables.

I'm with ya there, Dobo! This was my first GOBA and I had a BLAST!!! I'm still
laughing about stopping and asking a farmer if there was a gas station close.
He wanted to know why we needed gas! Then offered the use of his wheat field.
Oh boy.

Thanks to everyone for a wonderful week. Including Medical Squad 3 - since they
said they were the nicest. *grin*

Hello
My step son lost a cycling glove on GOBA, it was black with red on it. The
glove was only worn three times before so should be in near new condition. If
you have any that match the decription let me know and I can get you more

Hi :)

After watching the GOBA tour come through Tiffin, my boyfriend and I
are beginning to look into being a part of the tour next summer.
We've been doing some research, but would like to know what
suggestions you have for us.

What kind of bikes should we have?
When should we start training?
What kind of accessories are needed?
Is there anyone in the Tiffin area that would like to go on some
shorter distance rides with us when we return to campus (Heidelberg
College) in the fall?
Is there anything we should know that isn't in the online handbook?

The more we look online and get out on our bikes, the more we're
getting excited because its only 11 months and 1 week until the
tentative date for next years tour :)

Thanks!

Any thoughts? Know of any used ones for sale on the eastern side of Ohio or

Brigid,

I just completed my first GOBA and I really had a great time! I didn't find
out about it until January and I registered in February. I asked about 150
questions and read everything I could find about the ride. I picked up some
great tips from others regarding packing and organizing.

I bought a new road bike in March and started riding at that time to get
ready for GOBA. I started riding 40 miles a week and built up to about 100
to 125 a week near the end. I rode about 600 miles before GOBA. I was
worried that I would have trouble doing it. It was much easier than I
thought. There are 3 stops on each trip, and some people stop other times
just to rest and get a drink. You can set your own pace.

Some riders will start each morning at 5:30 and others will wait until 9:00.
I was able to do each ride in less than 4 hours of actual riding time, but
some will go much faster and some will take it much slower. With all the
breaks, I didn't have any trouble completing each ride. I later found that
some people do very little training before GOBA, but I'm sure that the
riding I did made it easier for me. There are also 2 layover days where you
have the option of riding or not. I rode each day, but some people skipped
riding on those days. You can decide how you feel each day.

My new bike is a Specialized Allez. It cost me about $600. It seemed like
a lot at the time, but that is about the minimum price for a new road bike.
You don't need an expensive bike to ride GOBA, it just depends on your level
of comfort. I saw mountain bikes, road bikes, tandems, cheap bikes, very
old bikes, etc. You and your boyfriend can buy new bikes or you could find
a deal on a used bike.

As for accessories, you need a helmet and bike shorts. Other accessories
are up to you. I use gloves-they are padded and I like the feel of them. I
also put clipless pedals on my bike, so I had to get shoes to go with them.
I have 2 bottles on my bike that I got free with the bike and a small bag
for the back to carry a tube, small pump, and emergency tool.

I bought cheap bike shorts from Dick's Sporting Goods and they are usually
fine, but on GOBA I was very sore by the 4th and 5th days. I eventually had
to buy some Chamois Butter from one of the bike vendors. Ask about it in a
bike shop and they can tell you about it.

As for clothes, you have to be prepared for hot or cold. Some mornings it
was in the low 50's and in the middle of the day it could be in the 90's. I
didn't have to ride in any rain, but that doesn't usually happen from what I
hear!

I hope some of this helped a little. Good luck,

Earl Strohmeyer

Folks,

Bike E recumbents have been out of production for nearly three years
now. New issues for keeping them on the road will no doubt be popping
up as they start passing the 10,000 15,000 and 20,000 mile marks. I
have started a new Yahoo Group: BikeE Forever! to help owners keep them
going.

Please let your friends with BikeEs know about it. Here is the link.

Hi Brigid,

This year was my childrens and my first GOBA. We didn't train nearly enough,
although we made it through the whole tour with little problems. What I can say
right now (I'm sure I'll think of more later) is that you need to get used to
your bike seat. You get quite saddle sore, but we found that it didn't
progressively get worse. It was just a minor inconvenience. Not a biggie,
though. But, I would recommend that on top of riding, you do other exercises.
I found that lunges helped to develop thigh muscles. Also, using free weights
to build up arm and shoulder strength was very helpful. The next GOBA will
probably be a lot of hills. This was relatively flat which was perfect for us
first timers. So, train in hilly terrain. You are right to be excited to do
GOBA. What a rush to come into camp at the end of each ride! We had a mixed
feeling of satisfaction and disappointment on the last day. We weren't ready
for it to be over. There are plenty of stops along the way to
break up the ride and it is so well organized. The evening events are great.
Good luck with your training. Maybe we will meet next year for GOBA 18!!

Thanks!
Brigid

I knew that I'd think of something else...sunblock is a must. Not spf 15, more
like spf 50. What you want to do is prevent getting a "GOBA TAN". White hands
from the bike gloves, white upper thighs from bike shorts and white feet from
wearing bike shoes. These tan lines can be quite noticable and difficult to
even out. If there is even a spf higher than 50, I'd buy it. More later.

I'm looking to buy a good new or used road bike in the next few months
and was wondering how much I should be saving up. I have close to $200
saved right now, but probably can't spare too much more (the fall
brings tuition, books, etc.). What do you think?

i dont know how much used bikes go for, but i see alot of new 03 and
04 road bikes on sale with shimano sora/tiagra groups for as low as
$350. if you are unusually tall or short, you can get the seldom
purchased/left over miny and maxy frames.

if you ride on a 56cm or 58cm bike, its going to be alot harder to
find a deal like $350 for a new road bike, and you'll be looking
more at around $450 to $600 for a new 03/04 sora/tiagra class road
bike.

i hope that helps some.....
my 05 giant ocr3 with sora cost $600 on sale, and is going to cost
about $800 more to get the bike modified for what i use it for.
next time im just going to buy a high end bike with the proper group
and wheels OEM on the bike.

ps, im not talking about walmart/ toys r us bullshit bikes, im
talking about name brand bike shop bikes, (giant, lemond, cervelo,
trek, etc)
for $200 you may be able to get a road bike at walmart or something,
but i wouldnt touch one of those with a 39&1/2 foot pole!

Brigid,

Just my opinion, but don't get caught up in the whole idea of having to have
all the top components on your bike. My bike is only a few months old. It
was at the low end of the Specialized Road Bikes, but I have put 1200 miles
on it over the past few months. It rides like a dream. From what I
understand, most average riders wouldn't be able to tell the difference
between that top and bottom of the components available. It's really only
important to people who are competing.

$200 might be a little low for a good road bike, but $300 to $350 is
probably a decent figure. It really depends on where you look. Figure out
your size and then start checking around to different bike shops and on
campus.

I can tell you that many people on GOBA are still riding a bike they bought
10 to 20 years ago. Newer bikes are lighter and have some other new
features, but that may not be important to you. Just check all of your
options. You might find a bike shop that will try to find you something in
your price range if you tell them what you want to use it for.

Good luck!

Earl
