Friends of bicycling,
For those cyclists who want to begin to make bicycling a part of their
everyday routines, including getting to and from work, school, the store,
the library, the church/mosque/synagogue, and everywhere else, we are
putting on our very first "Commuting by Bicycle" workshop Tuesday evening
starting at 7:00 pm at the Lane Road (NOT LANE AVENUE) Branch of the Upper
Arlington Library.
Cyclists who are already commuting but want to get tips and ideas on routes,
equipment, and riding in traffic are welcome, too.
Assisting me in presenting the workshop will be Dale Hooper, the Columbus
Bikeway Coordinator, who is a long-time commuter and the person most
knowledgeable about bike routes in and around Columbus.
Also assisting will be Kurt Lehmkuhl, owner of the Westerville Bike Shop,
who will be bringing some commuter bikes and other equipment and clothing to
show everyone how to be prepared for commuting year-around.
We will be discussing good routes for commuting, how to ride safely
(including free copies of "Bicycling Street Smarts" courtesy of the Ohio
Department of Transportation), and what equipment you will need. We will
also be discussing ways in which we can promote bicycle commuting and asking
what support we can give to commuters, including the possibility of an
online service to help commuters connect with other commuters.
Come one, come all! (We plan to give regular bicycle commuter workshops
around Central Ohio in the future, so if you can't be at this one, stay
tuned for future announcements.) The workshop will run until about 8:00 p.m.
