What on earth is an AR-OGAINE, you ask?
It's an acronym for:
Adventurous [adventure]
Rugged [racing]
Outdoor
Group
Activity
Involving
Navigation and
Endurance
For newcomers and experienced navigators alike, an Odyssey AR-Ogaine is a race
in which competitors travel on foot across the course, orienteering with map and
compass from checkpoint to checkpoint. The AR-Ogaine is effectively an
orienteering course that would be seen in an adventure race where teams plot
UTMs for each of the locations of the checkpoints on the map. Each checkpoint
has a point value.
A compass, a good pair of shoes, a backpack with food and water, and the desire
to enjoy the great outdoors are the basic necessities for a fun day at this
family-friendly OAR event! (More details available here.)

We've been humbled and overwhelmingly blessed with the feedback and growth of
the OAR community in all of our events this season. Thank you!!
However we may need to take the November AR-OGAINE off of the books due to low
registrations at this point. We extend this event again this season in response
to continued requests for ROGAINES in the mid-Atlantic region and out of our own
love of this style of event.
So, we ask that you "vote" with your registration - no later than October 19th
...or that you send a quick note to let us know the "why's" "what's" that will

After hosting adventure race training days every spring and fall for 4 years, we're going to take a break and not host a race this fall. There's just too much going on.
However...
We plan to host our first winter training day in Mid-February. We will set up an approximately 6 hour course (with a shorter option) including skiing, snowshoeing, orienteering, and ???. I know several of you were interested in a winter training day last year. We've got great trails and backcountry up here and (usually) more snow than we know how to deal with. Plus it will be great warm up for the Frigid Infliction. We even have snowshoes and skis that you can rent really cheap. If you are interested, you can reserve your space now, or wait until the official announcement and date coming later this fall.
Spring training race will still happen as usual - 8 hours (with a shorter option) in late May/early June. Keep in touch.
Hey all! Welcome to Fall! There are a few events coming up I thought
group members would like to know about.
On the 24th at 7pm there's a slideshow and talk with a local
photographer about backcountry hiking in the southern Andes. It
sounds like it will be pretty interesting! See the press release
later in this email.
On the 1st of October, ultramarathoner (350 miles non-stop?! yikes.)
Dean Karnazes will be giving a presentation at UVM. Its free to go
watch - sounds like a very interesting time!
Last but not least: on the 2nd and 3rd of October, EMS is having one
of their Club Day sales. As a club member, you'll get 20% off
anything in the store! Its a great chance to stock up on gear for
cheap. We'll have a table set up - stop on by and say hello if you
have a free minute. (And if you're interested in staffing the table,
get in touch!)
That's all for now - hope everyone's well! See below for more info on
the events...
-Tim
More info on the slideshow this week:
EXPLORE THE PATAGONIAN PEAKS
WITH WILDERNESS PHOTOGRAPHER TOM REED
Burlington, VT- Wilderness explorer, photographer and author Tom Reed
brings tales of backcountry hiking in the southern Andes to EMS on
Septermber 24th at 7pm. Based on his new book, The Granite Avatars of
Patagonia, Tom will present a digital slide show that highlights his
three separate trips to Argentinas Parque Nacional Los Glaciares and
his tours among the dramatic granite spires, Cerro Torre and Mount
Fitz Roy, or El Chaltn. In addition to spectacular images and behind
the scenes tales, Tom gives tips on the nuts and bolts of hiking the
region, including travel logistics, back country route planning and
gear selection. Whether you are an armchair adventurer or interested
in day-hiking, multi-day treks, climbing, or serious glacier travel,
this presentation will provide you with both information and
inspiration. Signed copies of his book, prints and posters will also
be available for sale with a 10% discount.
More info on Dean Karnazes:
Go The Extra Mile: Life on the Run
Presented by Dean Karnazes, Ultramarathoner
Superhuman is the only word to describe Dean Karnazes feat of
running 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days. Dubbed "The
Ultramarathon Man," and ranked among the 100 Time Magazines most
influential people, Deans message to all is, "Get off the couch, get
healthy, go the extra mile." With that mantra, and with a physiology
adapted for endless running, hes run 350 miles - nonstop - and most
recently completed an ultramarathon across the worlds four great
deserts, the Atacama, Sahara, Gobi and Antarctic.

We have been given a team relay at the 1/2 distance. This is an extremely
difficult event and he will be screening competitors.

Hello,
I moved to Vermont almost a year ago and am still trying to meet people to trail
run with on Saturday or Sunday mornings, early! Are any of you interested or
currently part of a trail running group?
Thanks!
Deanna
The 2009 MVP Health Care Bitter Pill last weekend was hands-down GMARA's best
race yet! The beautiful weather and Craftsbury vistas at the top of every...
single... hill... (there was a lot of elevation gain!) kept racers in good
spirits all day, despite a course described as both "brutal" and fun. Maps in
hand, racers had only minutes to choose a course of action before the 6am start.
A quick run down to Great Hosmer Pond, and 125 people were testing out just how
waterproof their mapbags were on a 20 minute swim through the morning mist.
After drying off, 29 of the 50 teams got all 16 points on an orienteering map,
then it was back to the Start location for TA1, new maps, and the first bike
leg.
After riding hill after hill to three points (one of them being Willey's Store,
where each team used their $1 required gear to purchase a little yellow guy to
keep in lieu of a punch), teams pushed hard up to Barr Hill. Water resupply, 8
points in any order on foot in the Nature Conservancy area there, and then it
was back for more biking, a quick gear check, and some fun technical
singletrack.
Last but not least, a run to grab canoes, and then paddle/portage/paddle/portage
to the finish! Little and Great Hosmer Ponds held 8 checkpoints, with a (very!)
muddy portage in between.
Two teams, Snot Rockets and Granite AR, were neck-and-neck all day long, but in
the end the two-person Snot Rockets finished first with a 64-second lead and a
time on course of 7 hours, 10 minutes. Granite AR, in their first race
together, took the 3-person coed division, and so grabbed a spot at the USARA
National Championship and prize money to attend. Terrific racing by all - this
was a very physically tough course!

Last but not least, our races wouldn't be possible without our sponsors! Please
patronize these fine businesses, and tell 'em GMARA
sent ya:
Title sponsor MVP Health Care, prize sponsors Outdoor Research, Eastern Mountain
Sports, Untamed Adventures, Endurance Aventure, TrailRunner, Zanfel, Catamount
Outdoor Family Center, Vermont Forest Parks & Rec, Madhouse Munchies, Umiak
Outfitters, The Craftsbury Outdoor Center for providing a beautiful venue and
helpful staff, and a huge thanks to our massage therapist Ginger Kipp. Of
course, without all of our amazing volunteers our races would be possible. They
gave up sleep, staffed checkpoints in the middle of nowhere, and kept racers'
(and organizers'!) spirits up, all while managing chaos
- "thank you" could never be strong enough!
Race on! See everyone at The Frigid Infliction in March!

All-
I will be leading 1 more training ride this Friday (the 24th) before resting up
for the Bitter Pill next weekend. Hard to believe it's less than 2 weeks away!!
This ride will again be in Waterbury on the Perry Hill trails. Plan is to meet
earlier this week (at 3PM) down at the trailhead by the ice center (email me at
batesg@... for directions if needed), and ride for at least 2, maybe 3
hours depending on the weather and the trail conditions. Come on out and join
me, last weeks ride was a blast, even though it was thundering and raining
during the last part. Well, they had us swimming across the reservoir in the
thunder and lightning in last year's Pill, so we have to be prepared for
anything, right?
Hope to see ya'll Friday, drop me an email if you think you can make it...

All-
With the Bitter Pill rapidly approaching, I need to get out and ride more the
next couple of weeks (and hike, and paddle, etc etc). With that in mind, I will
be doing some training rides in Waterbury (on the Perry Hill trails) the next
couple of Friday afternoons, and all are welcome to join me. This Friday, the
17th, we will plan to meet around 3:30 at the trailhead parking down by the ice
center in Waterbury (email me at batesg@... if you need directions). Look
for me on my green hardtail Kona. We will depart the parking area at 3:45
sharp, so don't be late. I plan to ride for 2-3 hours depending on weather and
trail conditions, and the skill level of those who show up. For those who
haven't ridden here before, it is awesome, with lots of climbing, and lots of
great downhill singletrack.
Next week, depending on weather and conditions, I may do a more "epic" Friday
ride. More to come on that next week.
Drop me a line with any questions, or if you think you can make it. Should be
fun, and both rides will be rain or shine (gotta mimic true race conditions,
right?)

I'm interested - and free sporadically. Tuesday and wed evenings are out. any other time day or night are possibilities in the next two weeks.

Good morning GMARAers...
Just wanted to let you all know that next weekend (July 11th) the Vermont Mtn.
Bike Festival is happening in Waterbury:
http://www.vermontmountainbikefestival.com/
Last year I went, and it was a great time. A good opportunity to ride some new
trails with folks who really know them (and no, no rides in Craftsbury,
unfortunately) The cost is $30.00 for the weekend (Fri/Sat/Sun), includes rides
each day, a BBQ, party, and general good times. And, the proceeds go towards
developing and improving trails in the area.
Check it out, as I said, it's a great time! And, if anyone is interesting in
getting together for a club ride at the event, post back to the forum and we'll
see about meeting up...

After many requests, AR Navigation Supplies has just released the
first volume of its Table Top Adventure Race and Navigation Challenge
books. Think of this book as Sudoku for navigators. The book is
designed to allow navigators to practice and improve their navigation
skills while at home, in the office or traveling. All you need is a
Compass, UTM tool and a pencil and you're ready for a table top
adventure that will test your skills and improve your navigation
regardless of your current expertise. The book contains 12 separate
navigation challenges covering 8 different states from New York to
California using USGS 1:24,000 scale maps. The goal is to find your
way around each map by following the rules of travel, plotting the
route and answering the questions presented for each CP. If you get
lost there is a help section that will guide you through the common
navigation techniques and adventure racing terms to get you back on
track.
Challenge your friends to the table top competition and see who should
be the team navigator at the next race, it may surprise you.
For all the details on the Navigation Challenges and a preview of the
first volume follow the link below.

Sorry to hear the ride didn't work out - keep on planning 'em, and
eventually people will show! (And btw, a great big BOO to more
rain. Irk.)
Best bet might just be to declare a regular weekly/biweekly weekday
and time - when people know further in advance, a lot of times you'll
get random shows.
Keep the rubber side down!

Hopefully you get some bites. We'll see - it may take some time to get
this rolling but once we hit critical mass it will be a lot of fun.
Cheers!

And, if you are anything like my team (Team Runs With Scissors), you are
probably not training enough. So come on down and join us for a training ride
this Friday (June 26th) on the trails in Waterbury. Meet at the Park and Ride
(off lincoln street, let me know if you need directions) at 4PM, and we'll start
off with an uphill road ride (paved, then dirt) followed by some sick, sick
downhill single track. Depending on the mood of the crowd, we may end with a
beer somewhere in town. Drop me an email if you are planning to come
(batesg@...) so that we don't leave without anyone. We'll go rain or
shine. For those that haven't been down before, we're only 30 minutes from
Burlington/Williston/Essex, and it's well worth the trip. Hope to see some
folks this Friday!!

If you do plan on coming, please let me know ASAP so I can get enough canoes. The course is about 6 hours over the hills and through the woods (and across the lake and through the swamp and across the fields.......)

Just wanted to send a reminder that the training race in Hardwick is this Saturday. Come give it a try; Marc puts on a good event.
Cheers! Chris
