NEW YORK ADVENTURE RACING ASSOCIATION PRESENTS

THE 3RD ANNUAL “SHAG” 26 HOUR ADVENTURE RACE

The Shag

SEPTEMBER 27TH- 28TH , 2008

The course layout is 99% complete and course vetting is in progress.  We are really happy with the final course design and we think you will be thoroughly tested and challenged and have a great time in the process.  Please review the following updates for additional information about the course.

Race Updates:

·        The minimum “mandatory” course length will be approximately 60 miles.  Total course length will be approximately 104 miles which includes all “optional” checkpoints.  Rough distances: 14-16 miles of paddling; 15-38 miles of trekking; 30-50 miles of biking.

·        It is extremely doubtful that any team will be able to clean the course – so you’ll have to put your thinking caps on and plan your optional checkpoints strategy appropriately.

·        No climbing gear will be needed for this race.  Unfortunately we were not able to get authorization for our proposed ropes/climbing segment for this race.

·        To hold to our NYARA tradition, we have a fun and interesting start planned – although not mandatory, hopefully everyone on your team possesses nominal map reading and navigational skills.

·        Biking – Be prepared to ride on a variety of surfaces – paved roads, dirt/woods roads, and single-track.

·        Kayaks – we will be using various solo kayaks and a limited number of tandem kayaks.  Teams will have a choice of kayaks on a first come-first served basis.

·        Lighting systems – having a bright lighting system(s) for trekking and biking will be key for helping you navigate to some of the tougher optional checkpoints.

·        Expect another newsletter the week before the race to notify you of the rally point on Saturday at 6 am.  Have your waivers signed and ready to go – see the SHAG page on our website for the on-line forms.  Time will be limited so be ready to roll!!!
