RE: Upcoming Races

For the Hardwck Race... I have a couple of two person teams who have plenty of outdoor experience, but have never raced before.  They are interested in having a more experienced person race with them to help out with some of the finer points.  They feel confident they can do the race, but would like to have someone with them.  If you are interested, let me know.  I'll give you a free race entry and one darn good meal at the end, as well as a great day of racing in the middle of leaf season (it comes early up in these parts....)

Thanks.

Subject: [gmara] Upcoming races in September and October - ranging from 3 to 10 hours

We're heading into fall and there are a couple great races on the
horizon. Marc Considine's 6-8 hour training race in Hardwick is set
for September 20th. I've included an update from him regarding the
event. If you are thinking about or planning on racing, give him a
heads up soon. He already has close to ten teams signed up, so this
should really be a good time.

-----------------------------------------------

On October 4th, Eco Aventure will be holding both a 5-10 and 1.5-3
hour race on the same day. Jim and I raced in their 12 hour event
earlier this year and it was fantastic. You can read the details here:
http://www.enduranceaventure.com/en/octobre.htm

The race location hasn't been revealed, but it will be within 1.5
hours of Montreal. We'd love to take multiple teams from GMARA up. The
short race is a great chance to just have a fun day or to introduce
someone to the sport.

That being said, we're looking at partially sponsoring team entries to
the event. We're still working out the details, but any team comprised
of GMARA members that attends this event will _not_ need to pay full
price. Let me know ASAP if you're interested. If we get enough teams
we'll also tack on a prize for the top GMARA team in the race.

Updates from Marc regarding the Sept 20th training race:

Adventure Race Training Day - Hardwick, Vermont

September 20, 2008

The Hardwick Adventure Race is one month away. While it's wet and
green around here now, the leaves will be changing soon (too soon). I
can't guarantee that it won't be wet. I'm still working on putting
together a course, and will be out trying out and exploring sections
of the course in the next couple of weeks. The course looks nice –
lots of remote areas, but never far from civilization. I'll be
surprised if no one sees a moose sometime. There will be people
posted at each transition area with water. There may not be a lot of
natural water sources along the course. You must leave each transition
area with at least 1 full liter of water. You may want two – you can
always carry an empty bottle if you don't think you'll need it.

I need to know get a definite count on how many teams (and number of
team members) are planning to come. Also, I need to know if you will
be bringing your own canoe or if I need to find one for you. (There
will be a small fee of around $15 for renting a canoe for the day.)
Please respond with this info.

Gear Check: Please be at Hazen Union School in Hardwick, Vermont by
8:00 on Saturday the 20th. Bikes and canoes will be transported from
the school to transfer areas before the race. Plan on leaving your
car along the course.

Mandatory Race Briefing and Map Handout: Approximately 8:45.
Race Start: Approximately 9:00 am.
I expect racers to finish around 4:00 pm. All Racers must be off the
course by 6:00 pm. Teams not making certain checkpoints within time
limits will be directed to a shortened course.

Dinner: Soon after the last racers finish. Dinner will be served by
6:00, and sooner if possible. Extra people (ie. family members) are
welcome to attend the dinner, (donations accepted) but please let me
know that they are coming.

Cost: $40 per person payable to the Hazen Union Outing Club.
Flexible. Extra donations accepted.

The mandatory gear list and directions will be updated on the GMARA
website within a few days.

Any other questions, please contact Marc Considine at
marc_considine@hotmail.com or call me at 472-5584.
