My wife heard on the radio (WINS-1010) today -8/2--that Joan and Gilly ,jr were
at Mickey Mantle's Resturant in NYC -CENTRAL PARK WEST by Central Park to make
some scholarship awards re GIL HODGES FOUNDATION.
I'll try to attain some specific info as I never heard of foundation & cannot
find any info on WEB. If you find something, let me know.
It was indicated in the last message "SEE BOOKMARKS FOR WHO/WHERE TO WRITE AS
COOPERSTOWN AWAITS GIL". I can't locate the bookmark.
My father was a friend of Gil's in Princeton Indiana and there could not be a
finer gentlemen. I would like to do anything possible to see him get elected to
the Hall of Fame. Please let me know the best way to help and spread the word
to others. Is there a way to join membership to Hall of Fame to donate money on
Gil's behalf, write letters, put an article in the New York papers with an ad?
Thanks
I wrote the President of the Hall & Joe Morgan re GIL being nominated for first
BUCK O'NEIL Award but have received no response which is unusual. Normally I
receive at least a form letter. Only the future can tell if this is a good or
bad sign. Continue to write Hall if you have not. Maybe GIL will enter Hall in
2010 via Buck O'Neil Award.
BE WELL
I DID SEND A LETTER TO MR. SEAVER AT ADDRESS BELOW ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO--NO
RESPONSE YET--BUT IT IS STILL EARLY--WILL KEEP YOU INFORMED-----JOE DEE

He'd be the recipient of a nice honor. To be "in the Hall of Fame" one
would have to have his plaque hanging with the others in the "Hall"
(between Snider and Eddie Mathews would be a good spot).

there is an article in Newsday today that the government should put pressure on
Citigroup and the Mets to void the naming rights contract of Citifield (because
of the bailout).. The writer suggested naming the park Gil Hodges Field, since
he played in Brooklyn and managed in Queens.
It probably will not happen, but wouldn't that be great?

Well, Gil served in WWII, was a pillar of the Brooklyn community in which the
team played, was a role model for which people prayed for him to break out of a
slump, brought a team from 9th place to win an improbable World Series which
certainly broadened the appeal of the game of baseball as millions of people
(including non-fans) followed the team in the summer of '69 -at a time when the
country needed something like the Amazins- and displayed the traits of admirable
character, integrity and dignity that the game could certainly use today. Plus
he was a hell of a ballplayer.
I think I have a frame work for a letter to Mr. Morgan at the Hall.

Agree with stat comparison. However, Rice played in the expansion stat
distortion era, and was not the all around ballplayer Gil was. And, stats are
the worst way to evaluate a ballplayer. If one uses stats alone compare stats to
own era players.
