Spotlight on HOF Veterans Committee Ballot Candidates On
February 27, we'll all find out if Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken will have
company in the Hall of Fame Class of 2007.
Twenty-seven former major league players and 15 former managers,
executives, and umpires comprise two ballots for the 2007 Hall of Fame
Veterans Committee election, on which Veterans Committee members will
cast their votes, with results to be announced on Feb. 27.
All of the candidates will be featured over the next four weeks at
baseballhalloffame.org. On Monday, 15 features, one for each of the
candidates on the composite ballot, were released.
Any candidate(s) named on 75% of ballots cast will earn election
and be honored in Cooperstown on July 29, during Hall of Fame Weekend,
along with any candidate(s) named in the 2007 Baseball Writers'
Association of America (BBWAA) balloting, results to be announced
January 9.
The Players and Composite Ballots, will be voted upon by living
Hall of Fame members, as well as the Ford C. Frick and J.G. Taylor
Spink Award winners, a voting body of 84.
Veterans Committee members received their ballots in early January,
with voting to take place throughout January and February.
The final candidates were selected by a BBWAA-appointed screening
committee of 60 BBWAA members, two writers from each of the 22 major
league cities with one team, and four writers from Chicago, New York,
Los Angeles/Anaheim and the Bay Area, each of which has two major
league teams. Each writer was asked to select 25 individuals from a
list of 200 players and 60 managers, umpires and executives.
Simultaneously, a six-member screening committee of Hall of Fame
members independently selected five players, who they felt should be
included. Two of those players were not selected by the BBWAA
Screening Committee and have been integrated into the final list. The
top 27 players and 15 managers, umpires and executives, based on vote
totals, comprise the final ballots.
The entire Veterans Committee process will be repeated again for
eligible players prior to the next election, which will be held in
2009. Managers, umpires and executives will next have their candidacy
reviewed again in 2011, once every four years under the new Veterans
Committee format, while players are reviewed once every two years.
Ernst & Young will verify the vote totals. All candidates who
earn votes on 75% of ballots cast will be enshrined during Hall of
Fame Induction Ceremonies, July 29, 2007.
