Top Seeds May-Treanor and Walsh, Dalhausser and Rogers advance to Saturday
play at the 2006 AVP Atlanta Open

Atlanta - July 7, 2006 - Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh and Phil
Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, the top seeds on the 2006 AVP Crocs Tour,
advanced through to Saturday play at the AVP Atlanta Open which continues at
9:30 a.m. ET on July 10th at Atlantic Station. The AVP Atlanta Open marks a
return to Atlanta where pro beach volleyball made its debut as an Olympic
sport.
May-Treanor and Walsh look to win their 7th title of the season in Atlanta.
They defeated No. 16 seed Tanya Fuamatu-Anderson and Pat Keller 21-13, 21-11
and No. 8 seed Tyra Turner and Makare Wilson 21-11, 21-18 on Friday. The duo
next plays during the Saturday night session vs. No. 4 seed Jen Kessy-Boss
and Nancy Mason. May-Treanor and Walsh are coming off a win at last
weekend's event in Seaside Heights, NJ where Walsh's husband, fellow AVP
star Casey Jennings, took home the men's title with partner Matt
Fuerbringer.
Holly McPeak, the winningest female beach volleyball player of all time who
competed at the XXVI Summer Olympics in Atlanta in '96, is seeded third at
this event with partner Nicole Branagh. They were knocked into the
contender's bracket Friday after a 26-28, 21-13, 15-13 loss to No. 6 seed
Dianne DeNecochea and Tammy Leibl.
The no. 2 seeded team of Rachel Wacholder and Elaine Youngs, finalists in
Seaside Heights last weekend, advanced through to Friday night play after
defeating no. 15 seed Angie Akers and Heather Lowe 21-17, 21-19 in the
second round. Wacholder and Youngs meet no. 7 seed Carrie Dodd and Barbra
Fontana Friday night.
On the men's side, top seed Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers look to win
their fifth title of the season in Atlanta, advancing through to Saturday
play after wins over No. 16 seed Paul Baxter and Jason Ring 21-9, 21-15 and
No. 9 seed Nick Lucena and Sean Rooney 21-14, 17-21, 15-13. They face
fourth-seeded John Hyden and Jeff Nygaard on Saturday for a berth in the
semifinals.
No. 2 seed Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger and No. 3 seed Fuerbringer and
Jennings, winners last week in Seaside, will be in action on Stadium Court
during Friday night's session.
Wild card winners Mike DiPierro and Steve Grotowski, both Florida natives,
secured a career-best finish after advancing through to Saturday play in
Atlanta. DiPierro and Grotowski knocked No. 12 seed Eric Fonoimoana and
George Romain and No. 5 seed Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal into the
contender's bracket after 21-16, 18-21, 18-16 and 21-17, 16-21, 15-13 wins
respectively before falling to No. 4 seed John Hyden and Jeff Nygaard 21-11,
21-19 the third round.
Local favorite Ty Loomis, an Atlanta-area native from Warner-Robins, GA, is
seeded tenth with partner Ed Ratledge. They were knocked out of competition
following an upset loss to No. 23 seed Jason Lee and Adam Rester 21-13,
17-21, 15-12 and a loss to No. 8 seed Brent Doble and Ryan Mariano 21-16,
21-16.
AVP Atlanta Open: Under the Lights
No. 4 seed Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings were upset in Friday night
play at the 2006 AVP Atlanta Open by no. 11 seed Larry Witt and Kevin Wong.
Witt and Wong, who won the three-game match 19-21, 21-17, 15-13, knocked
Fuerbringer and Jennings into the contender's bracket. Both teams will
compete Saturday. Fuerbringer and Jennings are still in contention, looking
to capture their second consecutive title this season on the AVP Crocs Tour
following a win last weekend in Seaside Heights, NJ.
In the second match of the Friday night session, no. 2 seed Rachel Wacholder
and Elaine Youngs defeated no. 7 seed Carrie Dodd and Barbra Fontana 21-15,
21-15. Wacholder and Youngs are looking to win their second title of the
season after a victory at Hermosa Beach in June.
In the third and final match Friday night, no. 2 seed Mike Lambert and Stein
Metzger, who won their first title of the season in Sacramento in June,
defeated no. 23 seed Jason Lee and Austin Rester 21-13, 21-12.
Main draw competition continues Saturday, July 8th from 9:30-6:00 p.m. with
a night session from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET. On Sunday, July 9th, play
begins at 9:30 a.m. with the men's final at 2:30 p.m. ET and the women's
final at 4:00 p.m. ET. Both finals will be televised on FOX Sports Net.
