Are you interested in Horse Trail Issues in Wisconsin? Are you interested in legislative issues that effect horsemen in WI? Then the GDHTA is interested in your input on trail issues.
GDHTA was formed in 1989 out of a grassroots effort of horse owners and non-horse owners to add a horse trail to the section of the Glacial Drumlin Recreational Trail that runs between Cottage Grove and London, WI.
Unfortunately the expansion never happened; however the GDHTA has gone on to promote and create horse riding trails throughout the state. Some of our accomplishments include:
Developed horse-only trails on 25,000 acres of privately owned land in Adams and Juneau counties that became the Castle Rock Trails
Assisted in the creation of McCarthy Youth and Conservation Park in Dane County which includes horse trails as well as a horse camping area
Established a foundation of contacts in state and county governments on which to expand communication between open space managers and horse trail users
Formed alliances with other recreational trail users and horse advocacy groups with whom we are working to preserve and improve existing recreational trails throughout Wisconsin and the nation
This has currently manifested in two chapters of equestrians who have come together to focus on the horse trails in their local areas.
The Western Dane County Chapter has been involved in the planning of a shared-use trail system within the Town of Middleton. This group has taken a leadership role in bringing the trails within Pope Farm to life
The Door County Chapter is working on the design and construction of two trails in the northern section of the county
