COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil -- Top-seeded Gaston Gaudio of Argentina
advanced to the second round of the Brazil Open on Tuesday, beating
Spain's Albert Portas 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the clay-court tournament.
Gaudio will face qualifier Olivier Patience of France, a 7-6 (5), 6-
3 winner over Romania's Razvan Sabau.
In another first-round match, Brazil's Andre Ghem beat countryman
Gustavo Kuerten 3-6, 6-3 6-4. Kuerten, the 2002 and 2004 tournament
champion, was playing his first tour match since the U.S. Open.
Ghem will play seventh-seeded Alberto Martin of Spain, a 6-4, 7-5
winner over Luis Horna of Peru.
In other matches, the Czech Republic's Lukas Dlouhy beat fourth-
seeded Florent Serra of France 3-6, 6-2, 6-2; sixth-seeded Nicolas
Massu of Chile edged Marcos Daniel of Brazil 7-6 (3), 6-1; and ninth-
seeded Filippo Volandri of Italy beat American Kevin Kim, 3-6, 6-3,
6-0.
