TENNIS: YESTERDAY HE STARTED TRAINING FOR SLOVAKIA
GAUDIO IS NOT WASTING TIME
Now that he has been confirmed for the team that will visit
Slovakia in search of the Davis Cup final, Gastón Gaudio
doesn't want to waste any time. That is why, while Guillermo
Coria and David Nalbandian are playing in Beijing and Mariano
Puerta in Bucharest, the Gato is training at the Tenis Club
Argentino looking for his best game on fast courts.
Gaudio is preparing for the duel in Bratislava accompanied by
Juan Mónaco and his coach, Franco Davin.
- Do you feel calmer now that you have been confirmed in the
team?
- "I don't know if I'm calmer, but I do know that I'm happier
to be playing in the Davis Cup once again, it's something I
love and even more so in a semifinal, it's a spectacular
situation".
- Is the team at a disadvantage or does it have good chances
to win?
- "With Coria and Nalbandian, and with Puerta and me supporting
them, we have good chances against any team. We have a team with
the best possible players, we are placed among the best in the
world and we can beat anybody".
- Does a special rivalry arise between teams in Davis Cup
matches?
- "No, I think we're representing a country and we want to win,
just as they do. They're special matches, but as far as I'm
concerned I have no problems with anybody".
- Do you know this surface, have you ever played on acrylic?
- "No, I really don't know it, I've never played on this
surface. I do know from what some Spanish players have told
me (Spain lost in Slovakia in the first round of the 2005
Davis Cup) that it's terribly fast and quite complicated".
- The last time you formed part of a team with Coria (the
World Cup in Düsseldorf) you had a problem with him. Do you
feel comfortable now being part of this group?
- "There are things that I don't even need to comment on
anymore. What we have to do is to prepare ourselves mentally
to win in order to be just a step away from achieving our
objective, which is to win the Davis Cup, that's all".
