Subject: [garmasters] Wine tasting and pancake breakfast
Masters,
Just wanted to send out a friendly reminder about our upcoming fundraising events. I hope your ticket sells are going well! The pancake breakfast is fast approaching. The date for that is November 14th! The big seller, the wine tasting, is November 20th. We do need all Masters who are planning on attending to bring an Hors D'Oeuvres that is bite size and easy to serve. If everyone brings in an Hors D'oeuvres that can feel 40 people, then we should have plenty. Last year, we ran out of food :(.
Please let me know if you need more tickets or did not receive any. I still have some packets to give out! Good luck and thanks for your hard work.
Subject: RE: [garmasters] Re: Wine tasting and pancake breakfast
Mitzi,
I will give Coach Justin the packet. You'll have to find him and ask for it; otherwise he may not remember. I will not be there this weekend. I will be around next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Hi Jen,
I need a ticket packet for wine tasting. I will be at the Lake all weekend covering a first aid station - can you leave a packet for me to pick up?
Thanks, Mitzi

Thanks very much to all of the masters that helped out at the Gatorhead this weekend. The weather was wonderful and I think things went really smoothly on the docks. thanks to all of your help!!! So far the response has been very positive and I think the teams are glad they came to the regatta. Kelly added some insightful comments which are appraciated, if anyone else has comments please share! We can always improve!
We have a service project that needs to be done. Lori and I were talking at the last work day about how to keep the boathouse cleaner. We basically needed something to cover all of the dirt on the path from the boathouse to the dock. I wrote GRU a letter explaining our need and they dropped off large pile of free mulch outside of the gate. It wasn't the plan, I requested that they come during practice hours so that they could drive in but they apparantly had other ideas. So.....we need to move the large pile of mulch and spread it on our dirt path. This will require a truck (maybe Justin's?) and lots of shovels and people.
Would you guys like to move mulch around 10am next Sunday? Please sign up on the calendar if you can help with this. The more people we have, the quicker it will go.
Please help if you can!!!
Thanks,
Jen F.
Windows 7: I wanted more reliable, now it's more reliable. Wow!
While a truck will work, a better
alternative would be a small trailer. It just so happens that Al Fosmoe,
Blake & Donny’s Dad, has the perfect trailer for moving mulch
(borrowed it once or twice myself). I am sure if we ask he would be more
than willing to let us use it. Also, shovels don’t work very well
when moving shredded mulch. You need pitchforks. I’ve got
one, but more would be better.
We can load the mulch into the trailer,
then drive it over to the path, and dump it pretty much on the spot. Rakes
then work best to spread it. In reality two to four people could handle
the moving of the pile, with a trailer. Then it can be raked out,
probably before a row.
If anyone has a morning or afternoon free,
I can ask Al if we can borrow the trailer, and at least get the pile moved next
to the path. Anybody available?

The weather forecast looks pretty rough but, who knows, maybe it will clear enough to row. If the group ends up erging tonight, afterwards I am offering dinner at my house. It will be simple- spaghetti and salad. I am not erging.
If this plan works, we can also tag on the Learn to row meeting with Gary, kelly, Julie and me. Julie, can you make it?
Anyone interested? By the way, I make spaghetti sauce from scratch - no jars here.

The winter rowing schedule is on the calendar!
It will take effect on Nov. 9 (the day after the Hooch). We focused on
giving as many members as possible the maximum opportunity to participate.
The weekend open rows will remain the same. Since Tuesdays and Thursdays have
been our biggest evening rows we will have an evening row those days through
the winter. Thursday mornings have not been well attended so we moved
that row to Tuesday. Many of the ad hoc rows have gone out Friday
mornings so now there is a scheduled row Friday mornings. The
Rowing Zone Workouts are back to Wednesday and the Monday erg workouts will offer
more instruction and technique.
To make sure we make the best use of our
resources to serve our members, the weekday morning rows will be monitored for participation.
If morning participation remains low the rows will go away.
There you go. It’s going to be
a good winter on the water.
Want a golden turkey foot or a free frozen turkey? If you win your event at the Head of the Giblet at Turkey Lake on 11/21 you will win meaty prizes!
This is a head race around a lake in Orlando. When I say around, you will literally row in a huge circle with a straightaway at the finish. If you are interested in racing at this regatta please sign up on the calendar. Take a look at the events here:
The deadline to sign up is 11/10, after that point I will work on line-ups. If you have line-ups that you would like to row, let me know. I understand that this regatta was not on our original regatta schedule but we did not know it was an option for us this year. The XC gave us and youth the permission to attend so this is truly a gift!!
Thanks,
Jen F.

2009 Hooch
OVER 20% MORE BOATS THAN 2008
Dear Michael :
The 2009 Hooch has an increase in participants of well over 20%. It is going to be another exciting Hooch with excellent competition and fun for all - rowers & spectators. We are depending upon your continued cooperation in the venue, on the docks and the course to make sure that we can race 1200+ boats and Saturday and over 500 on Sunday.
Please read and distribute the following information and instructions. They are critical to the success of such a big regatta.
We will follow up with another newsletter with a few more details in the next few days - Stay tuned!
We look forward to seeing all of you again this November in Chattanooga.
Daniel Wolff Regatta Director
2009 INFORMATION
UPDATED SCHEDULE The original schedule that was posted on our website was based on last year's Daylight Saving Time on Saturday. This year we will be in EST, so all the races will start an hour earlier. The new schedule also reflects the number of boats entered in each race.
Please review carefully the UPDATED SCHEDULE and make your plans accordingly
HEAT SHEETS WITH BOW NUMBERS ARE ONLINE: Go to: Ronin Racing Click on Competitors and then click on the race you want to see
ACCESS AND PARKING Information about Access and Parking in and around the venue can be found at
Please also check our venue and parking maps at Venue Parking
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR COXSWAINS AND CREWS Due the large number of entries this year, the Organizing Committee is providing a few special instructions to coxswains and crews to make sure that regatta runs on time and runs safely. The Organizing Committee asks that all crews pay close attention to the instructions provided to you before and during the regatta. The following is a list of instructions crews are asked to follow: · Assemble your crew at least 30 minutes before your race is called · Place your oars near the launch dock scheduled for your race before your race. Please check the race schedule posted at the regatta site on race day to determine from which dock your race will launch. This is typically only an issue in the mornings when both launch and recovery docks will be used for launching. · Pay close attention to Control Commission call to launch. Please launch when your race is called to avoid congestion at the docks. · Move quickly onto the dock when Dockmaster gives instructions to do so · Move quickly off the dock and immediately row away from the dock so that the Tennessee River current does not push your crew back onto the dock · Row to the start area with purpose. Do not delay. If prompted by Regatta Officials to move along more quickly, please comply. There is no time to wait for crews that are late to the start. · Start Marshals will ask you to stay pointed upstream at various stations near the start. These stations are marked by large rectangular green buoys. They are numbered so that you know to which station to row. · Before you are asked to bring your crew across the river and row to the start, remove warm-up gear such that you are ready to row before your crew crosses the river. · Once you have crossed the river, you will be instructed to row to the start chute. Crews should be no more than 15 to 20 seconds apart as they pass through the start. Novice crews should be particularly aware of this. · Once you reach the start chute, your crew should row at race pressure through the entire chute and onto the racecourse. Note that the start line has moved downstream such that the start boat is now located right at the red steel channel buoy. This allows the start chute to be wider and avoids the possibility of hitting the red channel marker. · Enjoy your race! Any additional river traffic details will be provided at the Coaches and Coxswains' meeting.
COACH AND COXSWAINS MEETING
The latest news and changes will be discussed at the C&C meeting. All coaches and coxswains should attend. The room can accommodate upwards of 500 people. Please do not bring your whole crew, or we will not have enough space.
The C&C meeting is scheduled for Friday, November 6th at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be located in the Ballroom of the Doubletree Hotel located near Fourth and Chestnut streets.
We would like to recognize breast cancer survivors who are rowing at the Hooch especially those rowing in Row for the Cure events. Please email Deb Farrell and let her know your name, club affiliation and event and visit us at the Row for the Cure tent at the Hooch.

Here it is folks. The moment we've all been waiting for...
The prizes from the Fall Rowing Challenge have finally come in!
I've just received a moderately sized box o' goodies from Concept2. I
will bring it with me to the boathouse this evening, and write FALL
ROWING CHALLENGE on it... just like that.. all in caps... you wont be
able to miss it.
Katherine, I will bring your prize with me to the Hooch.
Amber, I will set your prize aside so that nobody accidentally claims
it before you get back into town.
If anyone else would like to make some other arrangement, let me know
and I will do my best to get your hard earned prize to you.
Thanks

Challenge Prizes
Here it is folks. The moment we've all been waiting
for...

This Saturday is the GAR pancake breakfast at Gator's Dockside. I hope the ticket selling is going well. You can begin to turn in your money to me, Betsy, or Gary this week. Otherwise, you can turn it in at the breakfast. Thank you so much in advance for everyone's hard work and dedication towards making this fundraising year a the most successful year yet!!
Here is a social event for you that is very unique. Our very own Penny is a contra dancer and loves it so I thought maybe we could check it out!
If you are saying, what the heck is contra dancing, go to this link to watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4G2DmPRIALc&feature=related
Looks like fun to me!
Date: Sunday, Dec. 6th
Lesson: 3:30-4:00
Dance: 4:00-7:00
Cost: $7.00 per person
Location: Thelma Boltin Center
Let the sign up rush begin!!! I posted it on the calendar and I hope we have a large group that want to go!!
Swing your partner round and round....... :)

Don't forget that we have two regattas coming up soon. Right now we have seven rowers for the Head of the Giblet on Nov. 21st. The Head of the Giblet is 3 miles on Turkey Lake. You can still sign up today and we will be able to get our entries done in time. Later tonight I will look at the sign up list and call Brian so that he can do line-ups.
For the Sunrise Sprints you have until 11/25 to sign up. I would like to encourage you to sign up for regattas as soon as possible so that we can assemble line-ups and practice them. Waiting until the last minute makes it very difficult to become proficient with your line-up. The Sunrise Sprints is 1,000 meters on Lake Fairview in Orlando.
Please sign up!
Thanks,
